7970 Lightning, worth the premium?

Who will win this struggle? Pure brute power versus high resolution and high refresh rate?

Stay tuned for 2x GTX 680's vs 2x Lightning 7970's vs 4x Lightning 7970's running three 2B Catleap's at 4320x2560 @ 110 Hz benchmarks.

Incredible setup, and absolutely absurd financial spendage lol :]

Looking forward to the follow up of this, not likely that I would ever do 4way XFIRE but for the sake of testing and resolution, fantastico!

This card doesn't seem to let me use it's LN2 Bios : /

Shut down > switch to ln2 bios > boot up > Doesn't let me past windows boot up logo

Anyone had an issue like this before?

It acted up the first time I'm moved to the LN2 bios, as it treats it as a new card. Try unplugging the display cable and plugging it back in.

TBH the Ln2 bios isn't going to do much for anyone outside of exotic cooling.

I'd read in a review a while back that once they'd got it into LN2 mode they'd managed to get an extra 20mhz on the core which is a lot and i wanted to test the theory :(

Are you suggesting I shut down > switch to ln2 > take mdp out then plug back in then boot up?

or go into mb bios whilst in ln2 mode then take mdp out and plug back in?

Just got the card to 1320/1800

I'm suggesting when you get to splash, then a black screen, at that point remove the mdp cable, wait a few seconds, plug it back in.

Works for me, I'm averaging about 2 blackouts a day, if X79 doesn't fix it I'll either have to change monitor or sell the card.

Edit: what voltages for that clock?

Okay I'l try that thanks.

Blackouts as in computer freezes then you either ctrl+alt+delete or it takes you back to desktop with an error message like dx11 failed? or just blackout then you have to restart computer?

The former happens to me sometimes when I've been messing with msi ab for a bench then not restarting before I reset to gaming clocks and then play BF3.

1.35v but the OSD shows the card at 1.362v

Blackouts as in the system is running perfectly fine and the screen go's black while everything else is functional (sound is still there and I can log into windows blind etc). I have to remove the MDP cable and put it back in and its back to normal, it all sorts things out when I get the random DP error (DP has stopped responding).

Yesterday I came out of a game and the screen was all messed up, purple lines and all sorts, did the above, back to normal?!

That's never happened to me before. The only black outs I've received since owning this setup was occasionally when my gpu drivers were messing up.

I am getting this bug now with my card as it's showing in GPU-z that it's staying on PCI-E x16 v2.0 rather than v1.1 under no stress.

My OSD is showing my clocks at 675/1375 which isn't an OSD bug as it's drastically decreasing my fps.

So confused.

EDIT: My asic went down by 0.1%. Is that possible?

when changing drivers do you use driver or similar to clean out old mess???

1.uninstall afterburner
2.uninstall all catalyst and drivers
3.reboot
4.run driver sweeper
5.reboot
6.install drivers
7.reboot
8.re install afterburner and finaly reboot
9.good to go, try then

Oh and are your motherboard drivers/bios up to date if not do that first.

Up until now I've been using the atiman uninstaller regardless of the issues its been said to cause because it worked for me.

But ya I was hoping you weren't going to say uninstall everything etc etc etc

better than a clean install of windows!!! anyway it only takes about 5-10 mins for the above. Thats what i did and using 12.7, no issues so far.(fingers crossed!)

Followed the procedure above and i started the render test in gpu-z and it shows it flickering between 2.0 and 3.0, never staying on 3.0 : /

EDIT: I have chrome set to open 10 or so pages when I start chrome, so I decided to close all of them but one and the issue was resolved

ok so it looks like Flash is screwing with my card

have you enabled pci e 3.0 in bios?

mine shows as pci-e 3 on gpu-z but switches to 2 when running test as my cpu does not support it, where as yours does i think but has to be enabled in bios
