7970 Lightning, worth the premium?

you reboot after you installed 2.2.2? and did you give the gpu time to cool down to roughly the same temps as the gpu was in the first test?

See what happens when the EK blocks come out :)

EDIT: How often is that heaven 3.0 thread updated?

yes rebooted each time and temps were stabilised and rebooted after 2.2.2,
heaven gets updated after week or so, did you post link to your original?

Have you actually tried going 1.3v+ with higher clocks?

Okay and yer I did, thanks for pointing that out for me. Ended up posting a 1680x1050 while I was at it too.

Really curious as to what "8 pack" 's set up is

yeah can get to 1206@1280mv on core nothing more without artifacts can push upto 1325mv but does not stabilise, anything more and crashes

Water may help in that situation.

I'm on MSI AB 2.2.3 (I think). Making sure overclocking via CCC is disabled before you use afterburner, if both are enabled it may cause conflicts, like CCC throttling back AB.

overdrive is dissabled in ccc is that what you mean?

if my max recorded test temps are 73core/60mem/66vrm but at max fan mode with same volts/clocks with temps 58/46/42 what do you think is causing the problem?? is my core hitting a wall???

*edit*
so if my temps are below my max recorded temps will water actually help??

Where to get 2.2.3

Yer disable overdrive and in 3d application profiles scroll to the bottom and reset back to default for benches. For gaming you can do whatever

Not sure, but in my case where I have volts maxed out it's clear that what's limiting me is the vram/mem temps and of course GPU temps which in turn is heating my vram/mem up.

Like vega said someone got 1350 from a custom non full cover block, expecting good things from EK :D

I've been benching too much. I only now installed batman and it's tear jerking how impressive the graphics are with everything max, 8xMSAA and it's so demanding!! makes me want more cards...and I'm still using a TN panel...

Batman benchmark = 30fps average

As the MSI rep told me, the cards are very sensitive to temps, as it is we don't know what the VRM/Mem temp limits are, for all we know they could max out at 50c and start to cause issues with the core, but the cooler the core is, the less power the VRM's draw and less heat they in turn put out, same probably applies to the memory.

And yes, disable overdrive in CCC is what I ment :)

Also batman is very nvidia centric, DX11 is still broken in AC too, max it out in DX9, near same visuals, better frame rate.

.

so basically all test failed excluding the max fan one, so if i start from there and reduce the fans bit by bit until it fails would that give a better indication of max temps?

I tend to see problems when the my mem/vram go above 50C. It's rare that it doesn't crash when the mem hits 56/57C

Are you saying to turn off "DirectX11 Features" / "DirectX11 Tessellation" Off? or is there a way to directly switch from DirectX11 to DirectX9?

It could do yeah, though it won't have anywhere near the effect water will have.

Wish EK would hurry up and announce it :p They've announced pretty much every other block apart from the lightning, had 670, 690, 680 DCII, 7870 just no lightning!!

Yeah just kill DX11 features and it will revert back to DX9, still looks pretty damn good, about 19 hours into AC and just getting to work on the DLC :D

Yep you're right, no discernible differences visually although I was still getting 5-10fps in detective mode with those features disabled. Gonna have to lay off the msaa a little grr

O god and only £19.99 in steam! so tempted.

Wait a few weeks before buying ANYTHING from steam, the summer sale is due any time in the next week, you'll probably pick the same game up for 75% less ;)

Unless its a AAA title I can usually wait out for a steam sale to pick something up :)

I almost forgot about that! looks like I have one more option on the table now.

Catleap, another 7970 or every game in the steam sale + a Seagate 3tb to garrison them all? :p

DECISIONS DECISIONS

Also you sure you have 2.2.3? Isn't that supposed to come with voltage unlock/power tune unlock?

I'll double check just shortly, iirc I downloaded + installed 2.2.2 and it asked me if I wanted to update to 2.2.3, I'll grab the info the the XCL (or what ever its called) unlock for AB.

Ya think they're bringing 2.2.3 out very shortly due to the release of the 680 Lightning

Are you following the thread over at overclock.net? few people just got their cards and 2 benched 3dmark11pp with 12k+ gpu scores... why is that possible, am i missing something here?

http://3dmark.com/3dm11/3747645

Editing the config file is so much easier!

Thankyou!

Two 7970's work absolutely beautifully single monitor. I should have 5x1 120 Hz Samsung, MSI X79 Big Bang 4-way 7970 Lightning testing done by the weekend.

I really hope these work out as these cards should absolutely tear it up on good water cooling with the EK blocks. Pushing 1.4v and keeping temps no more than 40-50C should really produce some nice clocks. I just hope the clocks hold up well in crossfire, something I've seen doesn't happen with SLi 680's.
