Which out of the two listed cards would be the better choice, im talking in terms of overall power and capability (ignore the difference in price)

My set up is MSI MPOWER MB, 16 GB TeamGroup Gold Vulcan Ram, i7 4770k haswell chip.

I notice that the AMD version has more memory but less memory mhz. But the AMD version does have more stream processors.

You can't compare stream processors with CUDA cores. They're apples and oranges. I would say go for the 770. But you can do whatever you want.

IMO the HD7970 is the better of the two, I know you said to ignore price but the fact is that after you sell all the free stuff that comes with it the HD7970 is at least £100 cheaper and when you clock the nuts off both of them the HD7970 will perform better.

Don't forget that the GTX770 lightning came out after Nvidia castrated MSI over the GTX680 Lightning and forced them to limit voltage/clocks, for the newer 680L its possible to get around that by flashing to the original LN2 BIOS without the limits but you obviously can't do that on a 770L, so although the 770L has better memory I would actually be surprised if the GPU clocks as well as the 680L.

Unless you mostly play things that heavily favour green (I'm a WoW addict hence my GTX680PE :P) I would go for the HD7970.

The 7970 is the better card. The extra memory and extra memory bandwidth is what really sets them apart. The gtx770 has faster memory but the stat that counts is the memory bandwidth which the 7970 easily has more of thanks to it wider memory bus. My money would go on the 7970 lightning every day of the week. That being said the gtx770 Lightning is still a really good card.

Actually nobody should be getting either of the above cards, when this is at £100 cheaper:

I own two of these but when it comes to performance they can not match the MSI 7970 lightning.

You're both correct. If you want the best of the best go for the MSI 7970. If you want a bargain that will likely be as fast, it not faster (certainly faster over 1080p) than the 770 then go for the cheap but still a premium brand Asus 7970.

Very easy to flash once you have read up on it, mine overclocks to 1280 core 7800 mem for benching, 24/7 use is 1202 core 7000 mem, max temps gaming 61 to 67 depending on game, if you need help with the flashing or overclocking make a thread or send me a trust I help you as I am sure many others would

Cheers mate, I will certainly look for some guidance. I have put the overclock 680 lightning thread in my favourites as it seems there is most of the info in there. ;)
