Hi all,

So, soon i'm going to be going eyefinity / nvidia surround at 5760 x 1080.

The question now is do I get 2 7970's with 3gb or get 2 4gb gtx 670's?.

The 7970's work well at high resolution but the 670 has more memory, though the only ones available are short PCB, whether thats a problem or not?.

So, which is it to be ? :)

I wouldn't go near the short PCB 670's, but that's just me as an overclocker. Either go for the 7950/7970 or wait for the full length 670's to come out, as the build quality and heat sink on the short PCB models looks really poor.

I would prefer the 4gb 670 over the 7970 but not for the small PCB version. A 680 PCB with 6 + 8 pin would be great if they even plan on doing one.

Also, I do plan on overclocking :)

Bear in mind that a lot of people on this forum have dropped 7970 crossfire due to the dire drivers as well. You could be equally likely to have no issues but it's a consideration nonetheless.

Also 3GB VRAM is always going to be enough. You don't need more.

Whilst true (I never saw my HD7970's VRAM maxed out in Eyefinity regardless of settings) the OP's choice on Nvidia's side would be 2GB GTX670's or 4GB GTX670's.

Now considering that GTX670 SLI has enough raw grunt to allow settings high enough to consume more than 2GB of VRAM on a 670 I would definatly reccomend the 4GB models.

If this was a single card reccomendation, I would say go for the 2GB card. On a single card at this resolution you won't be able to push the settings high enough to use more than 2GB of memory and still have the game remain playable in the vast majority of cases.

Note - I run a single GTX680 2GB at 3620x1920

Also for what its worth I used to run a single HD7970. Whilst I didn't have any major driver issues in any of the games I played in Eyefinity, I also havn't hear particularly great things about HD7970 CF and Eyefinity.

I wouldn't go multi gpu with AMD 79x0 at the moment, just read of too many problems.

From the Anand 690 review:
"Unfortunately we’re going to have to put AMD out of the running here; as we’ve seen in games like Crysis and Metro the 7970 in Crossfire has a great deal of potential, but as it stands Crossfire is simply too broken overall to recommend."

Looks like i'm waiting for decent 4gb 680 PCB 670's then, seems AMD need to get their act together :)

Thanks
