hi there, im considering getting a new system built, im debating about which graphics card to get, ive never really overclocked anything before and im not sure id be brave enough to which is why im considering getting something "pre-clocked" if thats the right terminology

the question im asking is am i better off paying a little bit extra and getting the black edition (does it out perform its cheaper little brother), or am i better off just getting the standard edition?

Core i7-2600K
Asus P8Z68-V/GEN3
8GB G Skill Ripjaws
TP-Link Wireless
1TB Samsung Hard Drive
OCZ Vertex 3 SSD
Pioneer BDRW
Corsair Enthusiast Series 750W
NH-D14 Dual Radiator CPU Cooler
Windows 7 Home

if that was the system would it do it justice ( a friend told me the motherboard/processor might bottle neck it, im not really technically minded- is he talking out of an orifice other than his mouth?)

I'd go for the standard one and overclock. it's really not that difficult and more difficult to kill you card that you probably think.

If i did get the Preoverclockd one can it be over clocked more than it is already?

erm.. tricky question. The chips are all the same, none of them are speed binned for quality etc within the 7970 products. You could say the cooler may be slightly better. personally I wouldn't buy it, even if I had the cash, reviews haven't been amazed by that card and it is only offering an overclock that anyone could achieve easily with a reference card. It's like going to the petrol station and someone charging you 10% extra for filling your petrol tank. If they got the clocks upto 1200mhz+ There may be value in the product.

EDIT: Sorry, yes you can overclock it more, but probably not much better than a reference card.

There should be an Asus one one the way soon the DCUII edition which at least has an awesome cooler (3 slot though!) and build quality. Maybe about a month until we see this though. But the price is supposed to be just $20 more than the Asus reference... If you have faith that UK retailers wont just fleece you..

Get a standard 7970, overclocking it in CCC is easier than turning your PC on!

Yeah it is actually painfully easy.

Mine went straight to 1000 without any voltage.

I haven't pushed any harder because CCC is buggy and keeps putting my fan to manual with Overdrive enabled. Not sure if it's actually CCC or AB that's causing it though..

I've not seen a single one that won't go above 1ghz on core, which is ace... and the memory is awesome as well... tempted to buy three of them when I upgrade.

Last time i looked i think the black edition of a 7970 was anything from 1-7% faster than a stock 7970 whilst being almost £100 more. IIRC it equated to around 1-10 fps increase in gaming. This was a few weeks back mind you and i only checked a few benchmarks out so not sure how accurate they were.
