7970 showing blank display

Hi sorry to make another post but I am having trouble with my 7970 now.

When I first turn on my computer and it goes into windows the display is blank. Turning the monitor off and then on again fixes this and shows my desktop. Funnily enough doing reboot I don't get a blank screen it only when it has been powered off fully. I'm wondering if it is a problem with the card and it needs replacing or it is just incompatible with my monitor? I've tried all the usual stuff of uninstalling the catalyst software and trying different drivers, different sockets on the back of the card etc but it does the same with them all.

Anyone experienced anything similar?

Cheers

I get the display driver has crashed and recovered error if I let my monitor go to sleep. I don't think this is a driver error though and more like it could be a problem with the card itself :(

Its a driver problem. I am running the 12.2 WHQL with latest CAP installed and I won't be upgrading again until the releases become stable as I am running cross-fire

Apart from the driver crash from standby, all the recent driver sets seems to be ok.

If you are running Eyefinity you will need to go back to the 12.1 RC11 driver.

I'm just running a single monitor at the moment and do get the driver stopped responding if I let my monitor go to sleep. That's not the problem though its when I first start up my computer it shows the windows loading screen and then when it goes to desktop the screen goes blank. There is no error and turning the monitor off and on again fixes it. It's just more of an annoyance than anything.

Tried a reinstall tonight but the problem is still there :(

If I remove the drivers completely and have it as a standard VGA graphics card then it doesn't do it but as soon as I put in a driver and it's at my native resolution it starts up blank and I have to power off and on again on the monitor.

What cables do you connect to your monitors? Does it do it with just one monitor attached out of your two?

Have you tried all driver revisions, there have been 4 or 5 since the 7970 came out.

Hi

Yes I've tried all the drivers and all do the same thing. I have tried connecting it by a dvi to dvi cable and also by a display port to dvi and it does the same with both. I have tried it with 2 monitors and with 1 and it does the same on both screens :(

So you've got them connected by 1 x DVI and 1 x Display Port and to test you've tried it connected like so ...

2 Monitors connected via 1 x DVI & 1 x DP
1 Monitor connected via DVI
1 Monitor connected via DP
All driver versions since release

So it sounds like its either the card thats faulty but that would probably manifest itself in gaming as well or an incompatibility with your displays which would be a bit unusual. I've currently got two screens connected over DVI and HDMI but I've also had eyefinity going over DP's/DVI and cant say I've seen the same. If you could grab another monitor from somewhere to test that would be useful. After that, theres only the card left as the problem.

Thanks tribz

Yes tried all of the above and it's the same what ever configuration I choose. Testing another monitor could be an idea, I might see if I can grab one from work tomorrow to try over the weekend.

Hi just a quick update. I borrowed another monitor that had a DVI port and it worked fine with that. I then tested my monitor by HDMI and it is working fine. So it must be an issue with the DVI input on my monitors and not a problem with the card. Funny how I have always connected my previous cards via DVI and never had a problem. Oh well I'll just leave it plugged in via HDMI as the picture quality is just as good and it also carries sound to the speakers on the monitor.

Good news that you've got a fix :) Does that leave you down 1 monitor though?

Hi tribz

I can still use the second monitor through DVI I just have to make sure I turn it on after windows has booted. To be honest I've been finding lately that I rarely use the second display so it's off most of the time anyway. Would be interesting to try a different brand of 7970 just to see if that has the same problems this one is having. I actually put a RMA request in at OCUK but I'm going to retract it now.

With the 12.4 WHQL, I needed to unplug DVI and first-time boot using Display-port only.

I have two screens, one DVI and one DP.

The 12.4 WHQL is the first driver to show this problem for me.

I tried all ways Besty. Installed latest and older drivers. Tried different adaptors etc. I just couldn't get it working properly. Using a different monitor worked fine so can only guess that it's some kind of incompatibly issue with my monitors and DVI. If I totally removed the graphic card driver and had it as a standard VGA adaptor then it worked also. It's like the monitor wasn't receiving the signal properly and had a problem changing from the resolution the windows start up screen is in and then flipping over to 1920x1200.
