What are people getting at idle/load?

On my powercolor card I'm getting 59min (idle), and 77max so far (but have only played the original crysis on very high 1920x1200 so it may go higher on newer games?

This seems a bit high to me... the other review I found of the powercolor 7970 had 51c idle, 77c max.

My case has two slow 120mm intakes and the same on exhaust... maybe I need some more case fans.

I've got the same, i'm getting 30-40 tops for idle. It sounds like a driver issue preventing the clocks from clocking down to 150/300 can you check in Afterburner (GPUZ is broke still on 7970)

Seen one hit 83c but that's the middle card of the three which gets the least cooling. Top card sits about 70c and bottom one about 60c under load.

Ah, that makes sense. I've been using GPU-Z... which is where I got those temps, and it shows the clock as always 350MHz+ I'll try to find a copy of afterburner (currently their site is timing out) and report back.

Thanks for the tip.

UPDATE: It seems that my card when idle runs with a 20% fan speed, which is silent but warmer than when it has the 40% idle fan speed as defined by afterburner...

@dave_beast: do you know if your powercolor card's fan at idle also sits at 20%?

Idling right now at 42. Have seen it hit around 78 at load, overclocked 1125/1575. Considering my 2 5870's were high 80's touching 90 at load I still think this card has a bit of headroom.

Thanks. Does anyone know the max recommended safe temp for 7970s?
