Thinking about ordering this

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-062-AR&tool=3

I've got a VTX3D Edition X 7970 and although it's alright, when it goes under benchmarks at stock it can whirl a bit. Not so much bothered about noise as to cooling, the card can hit 85c under kombuster on stock volts. I want to OC my card and this means raising volts, with 85c already shown will this cooler help reduce temps and allow for better OC? Also I've heard running these cards in xf they get hot and you need to reduce clocks to lower temps.

Pardon my ignorance but it says it comes with applied MX-5 and also glue for the vram and memory. Is this 2 separate heat sinks? On pictures I can only see one with the tab of paste applied.

Also any alternative coolers welcome, but not WC as I don't want to spend 300 quid for the whole setup.

Your temps sound a bit high. If you are prepared to void your warranty anyway (unless you are really careful ;)) I would take off the heatsink and reapply some new thermal paste and reseat the original cooler.

Sometimes they are just not put together with much care, and have poor contact with the gpu cure and hence give high temps. Its supposed to be a pretty good cooler on the x-edition, some people have had excellent results overclocking it.

I would try this first before you lump 50 notes on it.

Is this better than the arctic? Also would it rule out future crossfire?

Also I don't think it's the thermal paste since the idle temps are really good 34-37c and current BOINC load temps are 64c. FURMARK and Kombuster are notorious for their burn in tests aren't they? Much like IBT so maybe it's not so bad for the X-editions?

My student loan has just come in and my PT job salary is due this week. I've not much else to upgrade other than the cooling on my gpu which is throttling my attempted overclocking. (unstable on stock volts)

Just running Kombuster now with fan on auto and after 5 mins temps are 72c, no idea how I recorded 85c once. I remember going north of 90c as well using Furmark  Ambient temps must've been scorching as my room is freezing currently!

Dont touch furmark or kombuster mate, furmark especially is known for killing GPU's.

Try heaven for benching and record your highest temps while running that. If it wont even run that on default volts then you should return it.

Whats your load temps when gaming?

I think the accelero xtreme is the best choice out of those two coolers. From others comments they are silent and really cool, might as well save £20.

The Accelero Xtreme is amazing!!!

Dropped my idle temps by 7 or 8 degrees, which doesn't sound a lot, but the temps under load are a good 20 degrees or so cooler, and it is tremendously quiet.

I run it at 100% while gaming and it is audible, but not overly. About the same as either a ps3 or an xbox360 I would say. Upto about 80% the fans are pretty much silent.

1 of my best purchases.

It is very large though, so ensure you have enough room in your case. It extends the length of the card by a good bit. Not exactly sure how much, but can measure the exact dimensions for you if you like. Wont be able to until tomorrow afternoon however.

Oh yeah I meant I can't run clocks higher than stock clocks of 1050/1425 on stock volts 1068 so need to up the voltage and when I tried this many months ago I recorded temps of 85/95c !

Also PSU failed(500w) when I went above 1150v So I've just ordered an 850w psu, this cooler, a 120 syther fan and some samsung green ram :)

Oh dear lemme take a snapshop of my card and can you say if it'll fit.... I've just ordered it as well :(

If you look at second pic it's currently pretty close. do you think it'll fit? My case it the CM scout.

Max length of the GPU I can get in his 269mm and just noticed the arctic is 288mm

:(

Now I have to cancel the order, or should I just remove the HDD bay? It's rooted with rivets so need a drill. But that means my 3 HDDS will just be hanging on the floor.

The Accelero cooler for my 7850 is amazing! My idle temps before were 55c with the cooler their 30c on load before cooler was 80c or above, now their 48 to 50c.

The cooler was the best thing I ever bought.

The cooler mounts offset to the PCB as well, offhand, as a rough estimate, assembled, it would go to about the yellow line.

I would get the dremmel out myself.

I took a dremmel to my old P180 case to get 6950>70 CrossFire in my case with AC Extremes, there is loads of info in there, but take note that the cooler on the 7970 is offset more to the right than it sits on my 6950's:

It is a fantastic cooler that is second to none for 3 slot air cooling, as above, it's super quiet too and you don't hear it until it goes over 70%.

The Prolimatech MK-26 can take up to 5 slots afaik, the Thermalright Shaman takes at least 4 slots too.

They might cool better, but they won't be as quiet as the AC, it plugs straight into the fan header on the 7970 and can auto adjust the fans.

Never ever use Furmark/Kombustor, they will fry your vram/gpu.

Don't have a dremmel, but would a DeWalt with a thin drill bit work? those rivets near the yellow line are what's holding the bay in and someone on a google search said they just drilled them and took the bay out.

Yep it looks like an awesome cooler, could do with it so hope I can fit it.

Haha thanks for the warning on Furmark. I ran this for an hour some time ago which is when I got the crazy high temps I posted above. Luckily my card survived.

Yeah I've already got one for my cpu, see pic above and they're quite good. Remember seeing someone do it for his nvidia card. Anyone tried it on the 7970, also how would the vram be cooled?

Ive done it on my 7950 twin frozr. The ram and VRM's have a heatspreader on them on my model, so I have just put extra heatsinks on it and have a side fan blowing over it. You would probably have to add some heatsinks to the VRM's and ram chips. You can do this with thermal tape which peels off in case you need to RMA it.
