7970 vs phenom 2

£250 on a new MOBO/CPU will maybe get him a few more fps at best. Most modern games are all down to GPU power. A quad core phenom 2 even at 3.6 should not be a bottleneck.

im 95% sure my phenom 2 is a "bottleneck" as i sed it the 1st post, athlon x3 445 and 6970 as choppy and baggy. got my phenom 2 problem solved and gpu was being used to its full. Order a 7970 and TA DA! history repeats its self.

IF my problem is not solved ill eat me own words and then some.

For the settings he's using (16xAA) at that res I would say it's doing pretty well tbh. Even if his i5 2500k doesn't show a great increase he will probably claim it has as most people hate to admit they paid a lot for little to no gain.

if thats could be the case MABY its the 7970?

So when are we gonna see some results? You said you need to wait for your 2500K, right?

If your new 2500K makes more use of your CrossFire set up ill be changing too..... or maybe wait for IvyB. Getting 55%-65% CF useage in games (not just BF3) is a right pain the butt.

Good luck dude!

im trying to buy the cpu before payday (29th) if not it will be then!
i read sumwhere about the phenom 2 can handle 1600 shaders max? this could be the problem. i dont no how try that is tho so dont flame me people.

And around 90% or more of those games are lazy console ports that use 3 cores or less. 2-3 cores on a Phenom II X4 is simply not fast enough to provide enough speed to deliver the scaling and maxing out the usage on the 7970.

I'd like to see some benchmarks of where a phenom 2 quad at 4ghz+ bottlenecks a single 7970.

you wont. also as mentioned 90 percent are consolized games anyway now.

the next big game probably this year will be oct and will be next bf/moh series and that will just use a tweaked bf3 engine so looking at that bf3 is gpu bound . only game i really seen thats worth playing is skyrim . is this worth 300 to upgrade for few fps ?

To be honest, the extra performance of 7970 over the 7950 simply ain't there for the OP due to the CPU limitation...

If I was in OP's shoes, I'd probably just DSR the 7970 and get a 7950 instead, as there's little point of paying £100 extra for no extra performance. But it still wouldn't resolve the issues of Phenom II X4 being unable to deliver minimum frame rate at above 40-50fps in the CPU demanding games.
