Hi guys.

Thought id pop my 680's out and try out my MSI 7970 to see the difference between two cards.

I first uninstalled all the Nvidia drivers and then sweeped it with driver cleaner.

I then removed the cards and popped the MSI 7970 in. Booted up the system and it will only get up to the windows logo and then its blacks out. On the monitor it looks like its trying to find the right settings to turn on but it just stays black.

I have tried in both slots on my motherboard with the same effect. I have tried the 680's again and they work fine.

Little confused? The 7970 doesn't appear damaged and all the fans and lights are working. The MSI card has only been in twice and worked last time :S

Hope someone can grasp the situation haha i don't feel as thought ive worded it right :)

Thanks again.

Is it a Lightning? And are you running any exotic resolutions/refresh rates (i.e above 1080/60hz) ?

Edit: If the answer to the above is yes, are you using DVI?

Hey there yup its a lightning model.

I set my refresh to 60hz before i installed the graphics card and yup using a dual link dvi cable :) Same setup as before

Regards

Hmm well that could be my theory out of the window then, I was thinking the system was looking for a refresh over 60hz while using the single link DVI port thats capped at 60hz.

Can you get into safe mode with it?

Hi there. Just managed to get into safe mode. Just cannot seem to do anything else :( Yep BIOS is good :((

I doubt its got no relevance but in safe mode the refresh rate is showing up as 64hz?

Not sure, if anything refresh usually defaults to the lowest, can you try setting the refresh (with the 680 in) to something like 50hz, then try the lightning? Just to rule out windows/the monitor trying to pull something over 60hz.

No problem ill come back and let you know how ive got on brb... :D

I can only select 59hz as the lowest, ill give that a try and reboot with the msi in :)

So we can rule out an issue with single link and the set refresh rate then.

To make life a little easier I don't suppose you have a spare setup you can try it in or a friends machine?

save your current bios oc/settings and clear cmos/load optimised defaults,it could be a dmi pool data issue with swapping the 680's/7970,dmi is a list of hardware that gets past onto the os just before it boots up

i cant think of what else it could be

I'm due a fresh install of windows could this rectify the problem do you think?

I don't have the option to try this card in another pc for a few days :(

^Try wazza's suggestion, that guy knows his stuff :D

Besides that then a windows re-install might be the only way to narrow it down to the system or the card.

Cheers guys, really appreciate your help. Will pull the cmos out and give that a whirl and then do a full wipe if that fails :). Just backing my bits and bobs up so i'll let you both know how i get on :) Thanks again

Right then :) Did the clear CMOS but that didn't do the trick so had to wipe my hard drive and start again.
I've got everything up and running now and the MSI lightning seems to be working now :) All the drivers are fully installed and I can access the desktop which is great :)
Last resort but worked :D....Must have had a corrupt windows file maybe??

Thanks again for your help :)

Glad you got it sorted, must have been a stray file causing some issues.

Have a similar problem on mine, I can crash the system on command and I'm 99% certain its just all the **** I have installed so fresh install for me tomorrow too :)

Looks like it :) In honesty I think its happened when I was switching the cards around to benchmark.

Can't beat a fresh install :) everything seems so fresh and snappy! Thank the lord for SSD's or id still be here in the morning installing stuff :P
