GPU-Z shows the VRM temp which is handy however VRM temp for my 7970 never exceeds 75c (even when overvolted and overclocked) and the max limit is 125c so its barely worth checking for me.

Applications you will need:

Overclocking:
MSI Afterburner (Kombustor is not needed)

Stress testing:
Heaven 3.0

You have to do something to get it to work correctly because of ccc interfering iirc. LtMatt's first response, check it.

thanks guys, i'll update the software when i'm downloading off Steam in a few weeks time, because it's not worth doing until Borderlands 2 is out...

i want to download 3 games in one go and this is when i update my pc, i only ever take it online when i go to Steam, i'm a bit odd like that
