Does anyone run these cards in a laptop?

I currently have a m18x r1 running a single 560m gpu. I know the 7970m cf would be 100000x better but I mainly play DayZ & Arma. Other games are not that intensive Project Zomboid, L4D2, Runescape etc.

The 560m can run them at medium GFX but its at full whack and fans are going crazy!. Been offered a R2 running 7970m CF for a really good price, But I cant find any real world tests running DayZ. Does anyone have experience with them on DayZ?

Pretty sure those games are more CPU based than GPU, and I don't think some of those games like multiple GPUs either. If the CPU in the R2 is better than your current one then it will be a good improvement with gaming, overwise you won't see much of a difference.

I did a quick google and it says the R1 uses a 2.3 GHz Sandy Bridge while the R2 uses a 3.7 GHz Ivy Bridge, so that's a good clock speed improvement (core performance is quite similiar between the two as IB is a die shrink of SB with minor improvements). Of course, this may be different with the actual model you've been offered...

Hey,

My current CPU is a i7 2760qm 3.1ghz and the r2 is a 3740qm 3.7ghz.

the upgrade will cost me roughly £400 after selling my r1. Next upgrade would be a 4800mq with gtx 780m sli in a r3, which will cost me about £2300 min for a refurbished unit and the 3740qm matches the 4800mq clock for clock on cpu boss. thats costing me roughly £1400-£1500 after selling r1.

This is why I thought I would ask.

But £400 for a .6ghz increase on cpu and going from a 560m to 7970 cf, also both are smaller die so SHOULD run cooler lol, seems canny to me!

I say go for it if money isn't an issue. Worse case I'd that most of the games you want to play don't get on with CF at all... So you can disable CF for them via profiles. Or possibly sell the second 7970m, making the upgrade even cheaper. As I'm sure you know, a single 7970m is miles faster anyway
