Im my main desktop system i'm running a 7970 , i'll have to be honest i'm not a huge fan of the 7990 due to problems of negative scaling in many games and the inability to disable the second gpu.

I was thinking however what about running the 7990 as the secondary card in crossfire with the 7970 ? , i dont see any problems with this working technically but what other pitfalls could i encounter ?

Im running a 3770k @ 4.5 and have an OCZ zx850 psu.

Many thanks

Ed

From what i have seen online, it is possible. As cool as triple xfire would be, it will require another PSU, which will bump your price up quite a bit.

What resolution do you play at?
Do you play in 3d?

Might be better to just grab yourself another 7970 if you don't need all that extra grunt. Your PSU will be fine with that much at least and in terms of graphical grunt, it is still quite a lot!

I wouldn't for the reasons given above. Waste of a card and you have said you are dismissing it for the reasons you gave, why add it to a system. Bang in another 7970 for 1/2 price and it will play pretty much anything you want with about 5% performance increase over a single 7990.
