7990 problem?

I have a 7990 and last night I noticed only 2 of the 3 fans were working. I have noticed when the graphic card gets stressed the third fan seems to start up. So I am unsure if the third fan is supposed to be running all the time, I seem to think it should but I'm not 100% sure and I would like to know before I return the card to Overclockers.

Do you disable ULPS in afterburner? If not until the card is under load it will use 1 GPU and turn the 2nd off.

To test this DL afterburner and disable ULPS. All 3 of my fans ran on my 7990 but it was a different board partner and maybe coz I had ULPS disabled. If it spins up underload then that sounds logical. In afterburner you could try running the fans manually and get them to 100% and see if it starts up then. Sounds to me like it only runs all three when it requires it. The mnaula fan activation will at last ensure that a signal gets to the fan correctly and the fan isn't intermittently failing from a dodgy connection for that fan etc.

I don't think ULPS turns off any fans with the 7990. I have a couple laying around so I'll check and get back to you, but my initial thought would be a dead fan. Does it work if you manually set the fan speed to 100%?

You can get replacement cooler shrouds and fans on the auction site. Might be easier than returning the GPU.

If the card was not still under warranty I would do this, but it still has about 7 months left.

I will also try setting the fan speed to 100% tonight.

Well I set my fans 100% and only 2 worked, the third fan did nothing.

So it was not quite tornado loud ;)

Can get replacements on ebay for about a tenner, the fan cable though is VERY fragile so be careful when disconnecting it.

They would just replace the fan, not the entire unit. I had two 7970's that were purchased in the USA, they gladly replaced the fans on the units for nothing but the cost of shipping both ways to their UK branch. They've got fans in abundance, of that I am pretty sure.

Yes it has 6 months warranty.

I have sent it back to Overclockers today and they should get it tomorrow, I'm away next week so I won't miss the card.
Hopefully they (or Gigabyte) would replace it with a 390 8GB or 390x 8GB :p

On paper the 7990 may look still to be a little faster or as fast, but considering the poor state of multi-GPU support (for both Crossfire and SLI), you'd be better off with a fast single GPU card that have the benefit of support for newer techs as well.
