Hi guys, so recently I had to RMA my 7990 and have now been refunded due to it being faulty therefore i am looking for a new card.
For the last 10 years i have been with AMD and I'm thinking of trying Nvidia this time round.
I'm also going to be upgrading to a 1440p monitor soon possibly the new Asus ROG Swift, so looking for something relatively beefy.

What would you recommend around the £400 mark?

Thank's Chris.

You can't beat the XFX 290 on price, this would be perfect!

YOUR BASKET
1 x XFX Radeon R9 290 DD Black Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (R9-290A-EDBD) £259.99
Total : £269.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

If you have access to the MM, there have been a few 290s going for £200 and 780s going for £265!!

Why do people say "If you have access to the MM..." when they can see the poster doesn't have access? :)

Unless there are secret forum get together's where friends and pacts are made promising to loan each other hundreds?

'Bang for buck' you cannot really go wrong with that 290 linked above. The 780 doesn't warrant the extra for pretty much the same if not less performance IMO.

are you able to add a additional £120? i knows it a big jump but two of the XFX 290's that snips posted would be my choice, ive got a 7990 atm and its started to make a horrid coil whine when the GPU gets the slightest bit of load.

may i ask, what make was your 7990? and did OCUK refund you or the manufacture?

The rules were different a while back and people with x amount of time on this forum had access anyway and yes, it's a secret part of the forum :)

It appears that XFX have still not put heatsinks on the VRM's of their DD cards and Legit reviews found that the 290 DD was throttling because of overheating VRM's in their review. Big thread on it here at HardOCP's forum too. I thought they would have done something about this by now but obviously not. XFX is not a manufacturer I would be looking at, no matter how cheap they are.

I'm seriously considering the 290 but how much of a difference would it make if i did get the ROG Swift monitor and have an AMD card as opposed to a Nvidia one?
I obviously wouldn't have G-sync.

Sorry missed this post first time round. It was an Asus HD 7990. It had faulty VRAM and Overclockers refunded me.

are you sure it's the GPU, the source of the coil whine is very hard to detect, my rig made a noise 4 days ago...............yea' the PSU blew !!!!!

this 7990 has quite a few faults, i keep reading about them today, i'm beginning to have 2nd thoughts
