Hi,

I currently have a 7D and have had this since release. The camera has been great and served me well in many scenarios. It is now starting to show its age (low light photgraphy is becoming an issue) and my photography has changed. I used to shoot a lot of sport, now I shoot lots of family gatherings, candid and holidays.

My current kit is:
Canon 17-50 2.8 IS - Lens will be sold if full frame
Canon 10-20 - Lens will be sold if full frame
Canon 50mm 1.4
Canon 70-200/f4 IS
Canon 580ex ii flash

I am unsure where to go next, I would like to go full frame and also experiement with video. For me the 6D mark II seems like the obvious choice but its not getting a welcomed reception. Which leads me thinking do I have any other better choices? (5D Mark iii)

Thanks
Matt

How much money do you want to spend I guess is the real question? A second hand 5d mkiii won't disappoint you and I don't think a 6D mkii would either especially coming from the 7D which is notoriously funny about lighting. If you obsess over reviews, DXO and click bait youtube videos then sell everything and buy a second hand nikon d750 or d810 yes they are 'better' cameras but most people will get nowhere near the limits of a modern dslr before they run out of talent!

Well I was looking at 6d mark ii or 5d mark iii prices and on import there not to far from each other.

I guess your right about reviews etc. I guess any full frame camera I chose will run circles around my 7D. The 5D has some feature like dual card slots which appeal to me.

Pretty much the same position and kit.

Was originally going to get a 6DII but given the disappointing IQ improvement from the 6D/5DIII I'll probably get a used 5DIII as the 7D autofocus has spoilt me.

Combine that with a 16-35 F4 and a 24-70 II and sell my 70-200 F4L IS which averages 250 shots a year...

But then I could change to Nikon instead given I'm starting from basically nothing... tough choices!!

The 7D's auto focus is very impressive and never misses a shot. Just when pushing the limits of light if can be really hit and miss. Im thinking of keeping it for when I do sport photography...

I think either one will be a great camera but the 6D II to me feels like a slight downgrade where as the 5D III feels like an upgrade, as the 5D has more professional features.

I upgraded from a 5D2 and 7D to a 5D3, can't even remember when I last used the 7D since upgrading, even though I shoot sports. The 6D2 has the advantage of auto focus while shooting video/live view and the fold out touch screen so if you're planning on in camera video shooting I would consider that. If shooting sports and need raw card speed then I'd get the 5D3.

At the moment 5D III is looking like the one to get, as focus is better and dual card slots win it for me. Im hoping by the time I come to do this near Christmas the IV comes down.

Video is just a nice to have, and something I would do on a second shooter later on, If I decided I wanted it.

I also own a 7D1 and the low light DR is poor. Video is still good though and AF is atill very impressive for its age. The 7D1 AF system did come from 5Diii originally.
Look at somy A7ii and A7Rii both are out standing cameras.
The 6D2 is not a viable option to me to go FF.
I use a matrs 6D1 few weeks ago. Apart from a lovely shutter sound i did not like using it any near as mich as my 7D1.
And I thinks that's also a problem in that the 7D1 & 2 are very eady to use and switch modes.
Nikon D750 and D810 are pretty damn good cameras. Wven though they are old units they still offer very impressive features when compared to modern kit.

No, it didn't. 5D III AF is the same as 1DX AF minus the dedicated sensor/chip. 7D II takes that technology plus some tweaks/additions which have been refined in the 5D IV and 1DX II.

7D1 AF is very similar to the 1D MkIV.

The 7D1 AF system did come from 5Diii originally.
