7th gen CPU required for UHD streaming via HTPC?

Hi all

I want to get my HTPC in a position whereby I'll be able to stream UHD content from Amazon and Netflix when they allow it (hopefully next year).

I understand this will require that all links in the chain are HDCP 2.2 compatible.

My screen is (LG OLED B6), my gpu is (GTX 1050), and my OS is (Windows 10), so if I understand correctly, it's just my CPU (Q6600) that doesnt support HDPC 2.2.

Am I right then in saying I'll need to upgrade my CPU to Intel 7th gen to allow this?

Generally it is your display device and what it is connected to, so the 1050, that needs to have the right hdcp. It is a copy protection mechanism for the display connection. The cpu should not matter if the 1050 is doing the video decoding.

Actually, you will need a kaby lake processor to do 4K streaming on netflix if I'm reading things correct so upgrades will be required.

I read something about Netflix also planning GPU based 4k decoding (possibly for later release). But yeah - it looks like Kaby Lake or bust if you don't have a discreet GPU.

Are you not satisfied with applications on your tv.? They all can play 4K and HDR.

Yes they're great, it was more of a general question as I also wanted to be able to do it in my study on a monitor rather than smart TV, so I'd also need a monitor that was hdcp 2.2 compatible.

Also watching via HTPC instead of the TV's apps opens up (in theory) all sorts of 'interesting' possibilities. If you get what I'm saying.

I also like the way HTPCs will always use the latest website to stream, whereas smart TVs rely on firmware updates etc.

Anyway sounds like it's kaby lake or a discrete gpu supporting hdcp 2.2. Thanks all.
