Hi

Has anyone here ever had any problems making the 7 Volt cooling fan mod (connecting the fan to +12v & +5v)?

Searching around, I have got the impression that this has the potential to damage a MoBo and/or PSU - has this ever happened to you?

In addition to a 120mm PSU fan, a CPU fan, a NB fan and a Graphics card fan, I currently have 4 x 80mm fans running off 12v and want to "quieten" them

Incidentally, I do know that the "correct" answer is to change the 80mm fans to 120mm ones or to fit a resistor/switch but I don't want to mod the case (Lian-Li PC-60) and am too mean to buy a resistor/switch ;)

You could 5v mod them, this way they're still plugged into ground. You always run the risk of things going boom when you start to mess about though.

Good idea, thanks. I'll give that a go first.

There is a risk, but you should be OK as long as you mod the fans and not the PSU wires :)
I'm not with you  I'm certainly not planning on modding the fans, I just plan to connect the fan cables to the +12v & +5v lines from the PSU (by modifying a Molex plug/socket) - but see above.
