Hi Guys,

I have a crazy problem that is driving me insane! I really hope someone can help.

I installed 8.1 on my alienware laptop, everything was totally perfect until a windows update today screwed my computer sideways and upon reboot my lcd panel had a max rez of 1024x768!

Both my intel and Nvidia cards had stopped working and reporting issues in device manager (all were perfect prior to this auto update today).

So, I reinstalled the manufacturer driers that were working perfectly before the update.

Windows then decides that it doesn't like the driver that has been working perfectly fine for ages and I get a black screen. It doesn't recover.

Now I have to button my machine, windows 8 load screen then a black screen with the occasional flicker. I can no longer get a display in windows, I believe the gFX driver to be corrupt or have an issue.

No safe mode for F8 or shift and F8, and I put the win 8 disk in, startup repair can't find an issue and my last restore is ages ago before doing a ton of things I don't want to loose.

I tried disabling hybrid graphics in the bios and no dice, it just won't get a display in windows. So now I am screwed with a stupid black screen of death every time I try to boot up and no way around it.

Can anyone please help with a way of killing the GFX drivers through DOS or something else so this stupid 8.1 install will load up with default drivers??

Cheers!

Oh and typically as always happens to me, there is no startup options section available in advanced options when I launch the 8.1 disk.

I can't as I can't get in windows :)

The latest drivers don't support hybrid graphics, so either intel only or Nvidia which gives wake up issues.

However, I recall having set the boot options you can set through msconfig before when I had issues and it worked in windows 8!!!

Boot to command prompt, bcdedit /enum

then:

bscedit /set {identifier from firs query result} safe boot minimal

Job done, /exit and reboot machine and I am in, in safe mode!! No try try and un-fubar the drivers and hope I can fix it.

Why Windows update decided to update the drivers I installed myself and specified is beyond me, must find a way to fix it and exclude them.

Cheers!
