finally managed to do a clean install of 8.1 rather than 8 to 8.1 and now im finding that my wireless connection is dropping frequently. from a google search it seems i am not on my own on this, but no fix from MS.

so, has anyone here had this prob and know of a solution?

it will sometimes reconnect and other times tell me it cant connect to the network. frustrating! any help appreciated. no other computers or devices are suffering btw.

I had this happen on my Netgear modem/router(was also using Win8.1) turned out my modem/router went faulty on the wireless side ie dropping out only on wireless(wired was fine),I replaced it with an Asus DSL-55U and been very happy since.

Have you tried it on wired?
You can try a different router/modem to see if that fixes the issue.

Btw try a different wirelesss channel as well that can sometimes solve wireless dropouts, especially if your area are all using the same channel.

virgin media hub thingy me bob.

drops connection randomly, happened twice while typing the original post. never happened when i was running windows 7 or 8, and the laptop doesnt lose connection while in the same room and thats windows 7.

iv checked power management and its not set to turn off or disable the device and the drivers are up to date.

there are loads of win8/8.1 WIFI issues but most of them boil down to drivers. if its an Intel wifi solution make 100% sure the driver is for win 8 not for 7 but has installed for 8.

I get my drivers from Intel for my Intel wireless on my 8.1 laptop PC,I agree its worth checking Intel's or the manufacturers website.

I do find wireless on 8.1 to be very stable in general,I have only used Ralink and Intel wireless however.

I had issues on my laptop when I changed it to Windows 8 ages ago, best fix for me was to go device manager and set the wifi card to G only, it was totally unreliable at N speeds but behaved fine after that.
