8 Core Coffee Lake on its way

So that basically confirms two things. There will be an 8 core coffeelake. And Icelake along with 10nm has been delayed again. At this point intel is seriously in danger of not only losing their manufacturing lead but actually falling behind.

They might be in a position where they are forced to use solder. However... with an iGPU.. I am thinking this is not going to be a performance chip so it is possible it won't.

Well shoot, do I pull the trigger on an 8700k upgrade or muddle through till 8 core coffee lake?

Kind of wish my pc would give me a catastrophic failure and make the choice for me lol

Note applying similar lead times to the equivalent 6+2 (presumably 8700k) documentation before that launched (05/10/2017) puts the launch of this around mid June / early July. Though I can't find similar pages for Kaby / Skylake to see if the lead times are consistent.

Just in time for 24 core Threadripper

Even better Zeed, I live in Liverpool remember (Motors meet). Just send me your address Vidar, and I'll arrange for it to go 'missing' if you wish. We can split the proceeds 50/50 and that way you're 100% up on Zeed's offer AND we both get to switch to 2700X. What's the downside? :D

It won't be.

Some would argue the 8700K because of it already isn't good

With the way Ryzen refresh is looking Intel are in danger of losing their meaningful gaming lead, they have already lost the mainstream productivity lead which they hope to recapture with this, that's also not looking like an assured thing.

Got a source for that?

I'm sure someone here posted a link a while back re Intel commenting they will continue to use paste moving forwards for the foreseeable future as solder degrades at a faster rate and on previous generations it caused some minor issues. I think it mentioned it even cracking in rare scenarios presumably due to the constant heat cycling. Obviously these defects aren't visible to the human eye.

Take the above with a pinch of salt though as it was months ago. 8pack will know I'm sure, possibly can't comment though.

It's unfortunate as for the money they will charge for 8 core, to remain under warranty you essentially have to buy pre delidded and even then you only get 12 months although it's unlikely you would have any issues.

I thought they didn't use solder any more because of the 'environmental impact' (and nothing to do with the additional cost...)?

Yes possibly, I can't remember the article well enough to remember the quotes. You can be almost certain it will be paste due to reliability, cost, environmental impact or all three. It must take years of constant abuse, high temps and heat cycling to result in the solder failing? That's unless the quality was poor?
