Hi 8 pack I'm about to place an order for an X99 build, I've currently got the Asus Rampage V Extreme 3.1 in my basket. I usually tend to go with ROG boards out of habit as they're generally very good for overclocking.

However someone on this forum mentioned the OC champion as being the best X99 overclocking board, it's very cheap (which puts me off) but I'm not looking to save money, my main concern is buying the best board for overclocking.

From your experience which is the best board on the X99 chipset, preferably one that OCUK have in stock.

I've even confused myself watching YouTube videos as I saw one yesterday where an Asus rep stated that the X99 deluxe was pretty much the same as the Rampage with regards to overclocking performance, I know they both have the same OC socket, but he said they're basically the same components, just different layout. I know the Rampage has a few extra features that do come in handy when overclocking but I actually prefer the look of the Deluxe.

Ultimately I'd take a pink motherboard if it's the "best".

Thanks

Hi again! Not stalking you, I promise!

From my observations, the only differences between Rampage V and Deluxe are:

1 M.2 slot vs 1 M.2 Slot + an add in card
1 LAN connection vs 2 LAN connections
Supreme FX vs Crystal Sound 2
4 way SLI/Crossfire support vs 3 way SLI/Crossfire support
And a different power delivery system.

All are respective.

There's also the Sabertooth TUF. I'd be surprised if there's much difference between the Deluxe and those two - I'm very confident that the TUF and the RVE are pretty much identical in terms of OC performance.

Thanks for the replies

I'm driving myself crazy, as soon as I get set on something I end up reading something that puts me off.

Like now I've been reading about the alleged X99 issues with Asus boards killing cpus on certain bios versions. Apparently what happens is on certain bios versions it shoots 1.8 volts into the cpu on boot up. Whether it's true god knows.

But there's been a few reports of peoples cpus dying etc. Add to that the crappy Asus rma service and I'm a little put off now, unless I order from "the rainforest" as they would just send me another board out, no messing with manufacturer, or sending it in for them to test etc.

While a good board helps still all comes down to silicon lotto with the cpu.

I've used two 5820k's and two gigabyte UD4's, both have allowed me to overclock to 4.6 @ 1.320v.

I'd get the champion and put the cash saved towards something like a better gpu etc.

Absolutely agree, and I know realistically most of the boards will pretty much give me the same overclock.

I guess the sensible option would be that route, I've noticed it looks like they've stopped doing the force?

What were the main differences between force and champion?

edit: Just came across this with ocuks very own 8pack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXxydgvQT_Q

yeah defo going for this one, think it's exactly what I need, not bothered about having only 4 dimm slots, and to be fair the price is really good. Infact originally I was going 5820k and Rampage Extreme, but for about the same cost I'd get an SOC Champion and 5930k.

Even the "cheap" X99 boards are actually very good boards, it's not like buying a cheapy mainstream board on a crappy chipset.

It will be the first time moving away from an Asus board....I'd still be curious to know how the soc champion compares to the rampage at a competitive level, not that I'm trying to say I'm competitive or need competitive level equipment lol, but I'm interested in hearing feedback. The asus deluxe and rampage has extra pins too (oc socket)
