8 pin power adapter for GPU

I've recently bought an MSI 7970. It has an 8 pin and a 6 pin power plug on it.

My PSU is very old now; a 600w Seasonic which has two 6 pin plugs and no 8 pins.

Knowing that I needed an adapter I bought a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter. However this doesn't fit in the GPU. It has the same number of pins but they are shaped very slightly differently. The 7970 did come with an adapter but that is a molex to 6 pin adapter.

So if a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter won't fit then is there a special type of 8 pin adapter just for graphics cards?

There is an ATX 12V 8pin for CPUs which is 4+4, perhaps that's what you got?

What you want is the 6+2 PCI-E, are you sure your PSU cable/adapter doesn't have 2 extra pins? Normally they break off like wooden chopsticks and can be attached back on to the 6pin when you need the 8pin.

Haha it looks like I was a total idiot as usual. It just crossed my mind that I didn't see a crossfire bridge either so I took another look in the box and found there's a foam base under the normal packaging. Underneath that is a another adapter with a correct 8 pin connector and the bridge :D

User error :)

It's too late to start playing with is now so I'll install it tomorrow.
