Hi, I am currently looking for an 8 port sata controller that is compatible with freenas. I have found the Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 but am not sure if it is even compatible? Does anyone know the answer? Also is there another alternative? I currently have 8 sata ports on my motherboard that is an msi P55-CD53. It only has one pci express 16x socket and three pci express 1x sockets. I aim to have 15 hard drives at some point running through my nas box and using software raid to manage them. I just need the bare hard disks to show up in freenas so I can raid them.

The mentioned sata controller is this:

Even if it's not supported you can probably find drivers for most controllers. Freenas is just BSD underneath so you can add drivers etc from the shell if needs be.

i've been looking at this supermicro card as well for unRAID. can anyone tell me if the cables come with with it or do you buy them separately?
also a little confused about the terminology re breakout and reverse breakout for these cables

I had the same problem re: cables when I installed by Perc6i.

Basically, you can get 8087 -> Sata cables. One way round they go from a sata port to a 8087 socket (for connecting on board SATA ports to a drive bay, the other way around is what you need - going from a 8087 controller to 4 sata drives.

Not sure what way round is which, but they are not interchangable.

(vague mode on)
Search for SFF8087OCF, which is a forward breakout cable.
(Vague mode off)
Forward means it goes controller -> disks
Reverse is for going sata ports -> backplane
