hi guys im migrating to ukfsn and they offer 8 static ips for free.
now at the moment i have a static ip on my current isp and its great for hosting games etc

but why would i want/ how would i use 8 static ip's?

If you don't know why then you clearly don't need them. :)

It's useful in certain situations - say you have a bunch of PCs and you don't want to use NAT in order to avoid port forwarding. You could allocate a game server one IP address, you could allocate your own PC an IP and you could allocate one to anything else you wanted - Xbox 360 for example. Or if you had a web/FTP/whatever else server, you could give that its own dedicated IP address.

You'd get 5 usable out of an 8 block so if you've got a few PCs you don't want to use NAT on then go for it :)

Sorry to hop in on this thread but I'm with NTL and can't seem to see if they offer static IP's?

Would be very handy for me?

ntl has Dynamic IP addresses (assigned by DHCP). You do not have to specify an IP as directed by some manufacturers.

Taken from Here

Don't know why you specifically need the NTL Staic IP Address, but here are a few things that are worth noting. I am on NTL in Brighton and these are the tricks I use.

First - never turn off your router. I can keep the same IP Address for 6 months or even longer. It will keep renewing at the same address. Pretty handy. :)

More useful is http://www.dyndns.com/ as this is a free system that lets you get a free (sub-)domain name pointing at your home IP Address. It is very easy to keep up to date with a script, or a quick logon to the site's control panel. I have noticed that some Netgear and Linksys routers are coming with this feature already built in.

You could then use something like http://ibot.homeip.net to always locate your home server. :D

(N.B. The "free" system needs to be updated once a month. But for only a few quid, you can subscribe and not have to keep updating. :) If you want to rely on your Netgear/Linksys router to auto-update, then you need to pay a subscription otherwise it doesn't know to check in with the server once a month....)
