lo guys

Which of these cards will perform better overall, as these are virtually the same price:-

8800GTX (around £200)
9800GTX 512MB (also £200 ish)

What da think :rolleyes:
 
I'd be interested in this too - please reply to OP - but I'd be personally running at 1900x1200 ? I gather at this res the 8800GTX would be better ?
 
8800 GTX is the faster (depending on res), as the 9800 GTX is just an 8800 GTS 512mb under a new name, and with an Extra SLi connector slapped onto it, plus the 8800 GTX has got more memory and a bigger bus, it can also be clocked up, so if its cheaper than the 9800 GTX, then its a no brainer imo, 8800 GTX all the way. :)

@Buckster, yes the 8800 GTX would be the one for you at that res.
 
thanks LoadsaMoney .... I sort of love my 3870x2 but its a bit of a love hate relationship - it can be quite fickle at times !

I think I'd like to go back to a single GPU solution !

Certainly do, just don't want ppl to fall into Nvidia's trap, which is to get people to buy a 9800 GTX over the better 8800 GTX, and to buy the dearer 9800 GTX over the same card but cheaper 8800 GTS 512mb, and to also get 8800 GTX owners to downgrade thinking its a better card, as its a higher numbered GTX to what they got. :)
 
I have had both cards and at the end of the day they are both good cards.

The additional memory on the 8800GTX does help and will give you better AVG FPS than the 9800 GTX.

With no AA the 9800 GTX will be the faster card but start applying AA and the 8800 will be faster generally.

I have had 3 8800 GTX's now and in the last 4 months I have gone to a 8800 GT, 8800 512 GTS, 3870X2, 8800 512 GTS, 8800 GTX K0

I will probably stick with the GTX until the G200 is released now.

i currently use a 512mb 8800gts, my monitor is a 1920x1200 24 inch benq. nvidia are just firing out old stuff theese days, the 9800gtx is basically a gts 512 with a factory overclock, the gx2 is 2 downclocked gts 512's on one board, best nvidia card choices at the minute are the 8800 gts 512 or the 8800gt, if you want a bit of aa/af at high res the 2 year old 8800gtx is still a topcontender.
 
More than likely, but that shouldnt really dictate which you get....especially if your like me and dont plan on buying a new card for at least 12months, they both will be significantly cheaper second hand in a years time.

Just my two cents,
but I too would have gone for an 8800 if I hadnt have gotten the GX2.
 
I trust my 8800GTX more, it performs better when it really comes down to it because of the larger bus and memory size. It's not gimped at higher resolutions.

You do realise Loadsa that nVidia probably have u down as a marked man? :D

Watch out for green and black vans driving around your area.
 
PMSL, and watch out for the C.E.O's van, its badged up as a 2.2hdi, but is actually running 2 1.1 lumps with a heavily modified transmission.
