80/90's pen game..

I am trying to find the name of a certain stylus/pen style thing that I remember from my early 90's childhood. I am sure those of you that had fulfilling and happy childhoods will remember what I am talking about, but I can't remember what the hell they were called.. I can't even remember what they were used for really, but Im fairly sure it was in some kind of board game.

They were a black enlarged pen shaped, with a metal ring on the bottom that could twist and turn with the contours of whatever you ran it over. When you ran over certain objects (colours Im guessing?) a red light would flash and a certain sound would play, where as on different objects a green light would flash and a different sound would play.

What the hell were they/what were they used for?

began with a Q...(or at least i think it did) that's all I can remember but we used to have one! red/green/siren depending on the colour it scanned.

Do you mean the book things? If so, I know exactly what you mean. It was quite a chunky pen and it beeped when you put it on certain points within a page. Some of them were tracing paths, others could be yes or no questions, it was an educational thing. I'd say it was more for toddlers though, I remember finding mine when we moved house after not seeing it for years, and I was 7 then.

EDIT: I agree with Steeps, it began with Q, or maybe the pen just had a big Q on it.

it had a big Q on it thats for sure, can't remember much about the book, just remember going round jabbing people with the pen to see what noise it made.

Yeah, I think theyre the things you are talking about - It makes more sense them being from some kind of educational book, I was wondering how exactly they would play in to a board game

Back to google for me as well, this is proving quite hard..

I found another thread on a different forum about it, someone said they'd bought some of the books but no one said it's name

They're the things, thanks a lot..I couldnt find it for the life of me.

I was trying to find them because, for some reason, I was trying to explain them to my girlfriend.. Who is, obviously, now asleep

Definatly...although having found them, they don't look as good as I remember.

I definitely remember them being better, but then everything was back then.

I remember the look of the books, but I have no memory of actually using them. I definitely remember running the pen over random objects though checking if they were 'right' or 'wrong' though.
