Many moons since I was at uni doing games design , fun times . Is it just pc or console based ?
Safe bet is to stick to Intel as pretty much all studios use it, hopefully Ryzen will start getting some spots along with being optimised for games .

Someone maybe more clued up to games design then myself as it's been years and I'm in a different field , but normally I ran fastest core I could have got at the time - core 2!! As well as GPU for rendering 8800gtx.... Damn ... Haha

thanks for that :D yeah i was thinking maybe an I7 but that could be overkill

a suggestion from intel side of things..

new coffee lake which all i3's are quads, 120gb SSD for the OS with 2tb hdd for everything else, cheapest 1060 6gb model, 32gb ram might be overkill and it might not, i cant get my head round game design applications so dont know how demanding for memory they are, but drop to 16gb could lead to a 275gb SSD, not exactly a high powered build so the 500w psu will do and is of good quality.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £996.18
(includes shipping: £12.30)

or if you scrap coffee lake and drop to 16gb ram you could get this which has the top of range processor from kabylake that is also overclocked, this processor betters ryzen for gaming, but you could always drop to a locked i5/i7 to increase the SSD size.

Total: £1,008.18

ArcticFrenzy wants the card to be a GF GTX 1070.

The Intel side of things are:
1. the quad core Core i3-8350K is DOA;
2. the quad core Core i7-7700K is EOL

:o

Personally would love to quote you a 8 core Intel at least !

Without knowing what programs you use or intended to- hard to see how much power you'll need.
My uni time was 2006-10 , we were using Unreal Engine 3, old skool doom engine and Crysis out of all things !!! Nd nothing could run that at the time haha. 3DS Max, Maya would be the choices for design and animation , Photoshop was permanently open for UV wrapping as well as video editing - think in the end we did more animation and level design then actually putting a game together haha .
Then scripting programs as well as a million webpages for guides and YouTube's it all started to add up.
Unfortunately wouldn't be able to quote a solid x299 system , nice amount of ram- good speed in quad channel and solid NVMe drive as you'll have a lot of core programs open at once and import /exporting

Using the older kabylake would be a good shout , or even threader ripper but with 1900x 8 core - but again costly and every studio is still using Intel based systems .
And they tend to run the flagship cards so if you could push 1080, great !
But you might be looking at indie side which is something that hadnt taken off quite yet for myself and didn't follow it when I had the spare time :(

Won't happen at least till the launch of the i7-9700K sometime next year. Or if he prefers - second hand of the older 8-cores.
The truth is that now only AMD offer great value for the money and you can afford something powerful with multi-thread support only by AMD.

True, I'm just coming at it from an industry point of view which will now be flooded with Ryzen cpus :)

Bit like graphic designers wanting specs... It's a mac- pains me to say it but if your a student and you get a job- it'll be 90% on a Mac and slight adjustment of they have been a windows person all their life etc etc .
Good that there's Ryzen and Intel systems spec'd for him :)

Seems now the rage is the Unity Engine
