Hi guys, wondering if you could help me out. I've never done an Intel build before so I could do with a few ideas. I can't go over £1000 for a complete system including everything. I'm doing some research for my flatmate and I'm weighing up the pros and cons of her buying a pre built system of for me to build one for her. Gaming is a big priority, so I'm leaning towards a self build, however she is a total computer n00b and I'd basically be acting as customer support which is a big p.i.t.a.

Thanks!

PS I'm also looking at the 7900GS card for graphics, unless of course an X1900XT or 7900GTX can be added in. Oblivion is the main reason for the build!

Needs everything, keyboard, mouse, screen. Speakers are a bonus, cheapo ones would do. I could use the OS on her borked laptop I suppose.

No additional requirements, the bigger and faster the better as usual for the cash!

How about something like this, it is near the top end of your budget but could be cut down a bit if necessary such as the 256mb X1900XT, smaller hard drive, cheaper motherboard and speakers but this system should clock nicely. I'd suggest using the OS from the laptop as it means more can be spent on the new PC and since the laptop isn't going to get used it should be fine.

These look great guys! What sort of clocks can I expect reliably, and do they perform ok at stock? I don't mind clocking my own PC, but my flatmate might be a little less keen.

EDIT: what I mean is that it's not going to be an uber clocking project!

I'd be looking for at least 2.5Ghz with ease and quite possibly more, 3Ghz isn't particularly uncommon from a 6300 either I believe. At stock they are in the ballpark range of an X2 5000 so you could say performance is more than adequate. :)

Hmmm... perhaps I could offload my opteron system somehow... :D

These systems look great guys, thanks a lot. I think these setups offer much greater gaming performance than the equivalent pre built system.

I did think you could try to chuck your Opteron her way as a cost effective upgrade for you but then I thought that might not be totally fair, if you can live with the guilt though...... :D

Well, I would feel a bit guilty, however she knows nothing about computers and I could probably pull a fast one seeing as she wouldn't know what the innnards looked like anyway. Bit unfair though :p
