Hi,

So quick backstory... 6-7 years ago I bought my first gaming rig. Sadly after 5 years at uni it fell by the wayside and quickly became outdated. Forcing me to convert over to xbox.

But hard times have (kind of) passed, I'm out of uni and have a job. So I'm desperate to return to the world of PC gaming.

So with this in mind, could some of you very wise folks please spec me a complete system for £800?

I need everything, OS/Monitor etc. Though I'm happy to leave mouse and keyboard out of the budget, then find and use some rubbish ones till I get hold of something better.

I'm entirely concerned about gaming performance, don't care how it looks or encodes video etc...

Thanks for your help in advance guys, I'm way out of the loop on PC Gaming!

PyroSkink

edit: Would like to be able to play games such as BF3, D3, SWOTR, Skyrim and whatever else is coming round the corner :D

I'm in the same situation as yourself PyroSkink, I've not had a gaming PC for 4 years and I really don't like console gaming so I'm thinking of getting a new system with the same sort of budget :).

Is there any point in PyroSkink and myself waiting for the new Ivy bridge processors?

Well this is up to you really. With IB being so close, it's probably worth holding out a few days to see what the prices are like :)

That being said, nothing wrong with buying a PC today! Note the second build has an i3 CPU - this won't be replaced for some time so if you're considering that build, don't wait for IB!

What sort of difference in performance am I likely to see between an i3 and an i5?

edit: also is there a fairly clear future upgrade path with either build?

I'll probably be waiting for IB then. I won't have the funds available for another 2-3 weeks anyway. Will have to see if I even need an IB processor, all I want to do is play new games on max settings on 1 monitor 22-24 inch monitor.

Sorry btw PyroSkink, don't mean to hijack your thread.

i3 vs i5 - gaming benchmarks near the bottom.

The i5 is worth it if you can stretch, as it'll last longer being quad core and it can be overclocked for a nice boost.

Either build will accept an i5 2500K, i7 2600K... or the IB equivalent [basically socket 1155 CPUs]

Oh and thanks beejjacobs! Its very much appreciated!

You're most welcome!

Thanks Warecast, but i reckon I'm gonna run with Bejjacobs first spec.

I'll grab that 7850 today while its cheap and then pick-up the rest when I have the money (hopefully only a few days). The money i save on the gpu should bring me closer to budget and let me pickup a IB i5!
