I have a budget of around £800 give or take and want to build my first computer. I wanna get the best I can for my money and as this is my first build really don't know what I'm looking for - looking for some wide suggestions on what is best for my money etc.

I have a monitor and a TV which I will play from (both running at 1920x1200)
I have Surround speakers which run from USB and right now I can handle using the keyboard and mouse I have - apart from that and a 7 - 8 year old PC that struggles to run Age of Empires I need everything

Thanks in advance guys!

Also forgot to mention that I MAY be using 3DSmax in the near future and if so would like to be able to run comfortably on this setup too :)

I will be needing a new OS but that can be omitted from the price for now, thanks guys!

EDIT* You may also want to look into after-market cooling for your CPU, as the stock heatsinks & fans are quite frankly (in my experiences) are loud and rubbish at cooling. A decent air cooler like the Megahalems or Corsair H50 (enclosed water cooled loop) are both suitable products. (If buying the Megahalems, and plan to use it on an am3 setup, beware as you may need to buy a retention kit, I know I did).

AMD Option:

I left the case out as I think choosing a case is personal taste, so you can decide on this on your own.

The 5850 GFX card will run sufficiently on your desired resolution, and with the Quad Core Phenom, there's no worry with gaming. The motherboard supports crossfire also, so a second GPU can be added a later date if required.

Intel Option:

Same goes really, I've heard good things about the i5 750 performing well in games ... this link might just justify your decision.

Good spec above, I just specced the same, saved me uploading a screenshot of it!

Edit: I specced the AMD build, would go for that one simply because I think the AM3 socket with have a longer lifespan than LGA1156.

I think the OP will need a case and my guess is the OP will also need windows.

If you read his opening post, he states he needs an OS, but this isn't included in the £800 price tag.

Secondly, if you read my post there's reasoning as to why I left a case out.

I left the case out as I think choosing a case is personal taste, so you can decide on this on your own.

I'm also +1 on that AMD spec aswell (and I'm an Intel fan!) As Daaaveee says the AM3 will probably be more future proof than the 1156.
