Im after idea's on a rig for a friend of mine. He has around £800 to spend.

He will need OS but will be using a 32 led tv as his monitor.

The machine will be used for general browsing and watching movies etc so a bluray player will be needed.

Im quite out of the loop having not had a pc for over a year so any idea's/input would be much appreciated. Anything ive forgot to mention drop a response and il find out.

Thanks in advance.

I dont suspect it has to be around that mark. Thats just what he said he had to spend. I think he's the kind of bloke who would rather just spend the £800 and have overkill seeing as he's budgeted that much anyway.

If its not for any gaming then an i3 2100/2120 will be more than enough with a NviGT430 or Radeon HD6570 for better Blu Ray playback than the integrated GPU. If he wants to blow £800 then i5 2500K (retail), Z68 motherboard, 8GB RAM, 64/120GB SSD etc.

Im presuming a 600W power supply will be ok, considering he wont be running dual cards or anything?

complete and utter rubbish ;)

but seriously not a utter rubish tho you can change somethings to save money which doesn't unnecessarily need to be spent.

the mobo if no plan on sli/xfire then the z68ap-d3 £85 will save £45

if you're going for the i2500k then its really a blesphemy if you don't overclock it, for this you'll want a better cooler than the instel stock(even not ocing 3rd party cooler will give better noise/temps). with air cooles you need to be wary of them overhanging the ram slot/s so ram with fins will interfer with the cooler, so either no fins on ram or closed loop liquid cooler(e.g. corsair h60) or custom watercooling.

the cooler of choice is the gelid tranquilo(£26) which is quite and good cooling to upto 4.6ghz

with the ram there is no need for faster than 1600mhz, no realworld performance difference. the kingston hyperx genesis grey pc3-12800 1600mhz £40 is popular.

psu the antec truepower new modular 650w £70 is better and cheaper.

blueray you want retail not oem as no software with the oem.

ssd the crucial m4 is the one of choice over the ocz.

Great thanks for the input. So ive re-done the rig following your advice. Would the following be suitable.

Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT128M4SSD2) £151.99

Samsung SpinPoint F4 EcoGreen 2TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD204UI) £119.99

Intel Core i3-2100 3.10GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £94.99

Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £84.98

Cooler Master CM-690 II Lite Dominator Case - Black £69.98

Antec TruePower New Modular 650W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £69.98

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6570 Ultimate Edition 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express SILENT Graphics Card £64.99

Samsung SH-B123L/RSBP 12x BluRay ROM / DVDRW DL & RAM Lightscribe SATA-II Optical Drive - Black (Retail) £59.99

Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £39.95

Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/AM2+/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £22.99

Total: £794.84

To be honest the chance of him going into overclocking are so slim so not worth paying for the 2500K. Fairly solid build?

I think the resolution being used, should he decide he wants to game, will require a higher spec card. If he has a change of heart and wants to game then he will have to upgrade his gpu at some point in the future.

Switch back to a Coolermaster PSU - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-166-CM&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1103

And you get £20 back - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18347004

Then you can up the GFX or the CPU to the i3 2120.

Hmmm.... a home cinema....low power...quiet...the last PC case you will ever need.

A small HDD until the 1TB ones come down in price.

You don't need i5, i3 may be, you don't need SSD you're not doing anything fast here.

You don't need more that 300W here either. The 450W PSU would allow a gaming gfx card to be added in the future.

The discrete card here will ace bluray playback. The motherboard does all the hd audio you will need.

This also includes 2 AMD baseball caps to wear whilst the team builds the rig and you load the OS :p

Fractal Design Define R3 Midi Tower Case - Black Pearl £84.98
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02050) £79.99
Samsung SpinPoint F4 320GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD322GJ) £69.98
Samsung SH-B123L/BSBP 12x BluRay ROM / 16x DVD±RW Lightscribe SATA-II Optical Drive - Black (OEM) £54.98

AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 250 3.00GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £53.99
Corsair Vengeance Arctic White 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit £45.59
Gigabyte GA-M68MT-S2 (AM3+) Motherboard - Retail £33.98

Lepa W-Series 450W '80 Plus' Power Supply - with FREE LEPA Hard Drive Enclosure £43.99
BeQuiet Dark Rock Advanced CPU Cooler (Socket LGA 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366, AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / 754 / 939 / 940) £41.99
MSI GeForce N210 1024MB GDDR3 "Low Profile" PCI-Express Graphics Card £24.98
AMD Green Baseball Cap x2 £3.98

Total : £559.87

Cast an eye over the memory compatibility and make sure the PSU choice is quiet. 8gig memory is overkill, use 4gig if you want.

This leaves loads of cash for a wireless kb, mouse, and copies of Ghost, Dirty Dancing and Megamind for your viewing pleasure.

Alternatively use an i3 2100 and an Intel MB and burn a few quid more. I do not know how good the onboard graphics handles Hi Def but someone here will.

Did you really just suggest a AMD system? lol

Why not Stulid? It's a HTPC?

I do discuss an i3 config as an alternative.

A laptop would do this. I was also looking around and there is a HTPC thread on here to.

Hey I have been polite, I expect polite in return, understood?

I am recommending components on sale here, those that I am familiar with. If you are more knowledgeable good for you.

If you recommend those components for HTPC post a spec and I will take a look with interest.

That post is polite, especially coming from me;)

AMD offer nothing and have nothing to compete with Intel at all price levels now.

lol then post the spec master, come on where is it I am waiting?

You can see I want quiet, low power, which motherboard and memory with your intel flavored cpu.

And it better include baseball caps.

Always a master and an apprentice. Hey didn't they film Jurasic Park in Weston-super-mare?

Okay I am going to check my config on the htpc section cos all I see is overpowered rigs here and siting on the fence.

If they say it is junk fine, if not........

What is an OP?
