hi all,

first of this is my first post and i would also like to thank everyone who has posted about the 8800gt.

i recently purchased a zotac amp 8800gt from ocuk.

its a pre overclocked card at the following:-

core 700
shaders 1700
memory 2000

everything was great until i tried to play fear at max settings with a rez of 2560 by 1600.

the game would lock up and display red checks on the screen.

i tried all of the below but to no avail.

1. set the fan to 100% in riva tuner
2. underclocked the ram by 50
3. installed an artic cooler accelero

the only thing that worked in the end was to add a 92mm nexus fan. now i can play fear without and freezes or red checks on the screen.

the card now idles at 34C and has a load temp of 45C.

i hope this helps anyone with the same problem.

I had a very similar problem, green fuzzy artifacting over the screen. I think I'll try turning up the fan speed using rivatuner, it hasn't happened for a while though.

If it doesn't do the clocks it states i would get a refund and get the new gts tuesday.
+ most drivers have issues of one kind or other but artifacts sounds more like it's over its clock limit than heat.
For all we know not enough thorough tests are done on these cards and it may pass those clocks for however long they test it but i doubt they actually test gaming do they.I am running 720/1753/2000 on the defalt cooling so i don't think the cooling was the issue.

Precisely my thoughts but RMAing it at the moment is too faffy. I think I'll just put up with it and if it happens again downclock a little. Besides, I can't fit a GTS in my case.

And what do you do when you come to sell it ? Do you lie ? Or come clean and say it doesnt work properly except with the Accelero ? (and thus no warranty)

I would RMA and save yourself the hassel.

is yours a zotac amp as well firebar?

i should rma the card but with stock shortages etc just to much of a pain plus im not sure wether i would be allowed to rma it now that i have put a new heatsink on it?

c64/devious have you tried running fear a few times at max settings?

I'd come clean and tell the person. I'm not likely to sell the card for a few years yet, if at all.

Yes it is the Zotac AMP too. It's been doing fine lately though, so ....

just wondered my card only froze with red checks in fear, all my other games and ati tool fuzz thing worked ok.

does yours freeze in just fear or any other games?
does you fan ramp up at all as mine didnt?

Maybe a driver issue ? try 169.09 or the new 169.13 also look to setup a fn profile on riva tuner 30% fan means it will hit 80c +and 100c before the 100% fan kicks in.

I tend to agree. I run my BFG OC2 at it's oc'd stock speed of 675/1974/1950. I adjusted fan speed with rivatuner to work according to temperatures. On idle the fan is 30% and the card is 59 degrees. That's much higher than your load temperature of 45 degrees!!! The fan goes up to 65% during 3D gaming (Crysis, Oblivion). The temperature of the card under load reaches 78 - 79 absolute maximum. It still functions perfectly, no artifacts, no lockups. I'll post a link if I manage to find it, but somewhere I read correspondence from either BFG or EVGA saying that the card will still function well as long as the core is under 100 degrees.....

And my previous card a POV 8600GTS used to reach temperatures of 86 maximum and it always worked perfectly.

Btw... try underclocking the ram further (stock is supposed to be 1800)... if it works it seems you have the identical problem of Woozy here :( Apparently memory clock is the weak point of these cards. Definitely a reason to rma...

Mine did that when i clocked the memory too far. Clocked it up to 2020 and ran 3DMark06, half way through it locked up and loads of red blocks everywhere. Clocked it back down and it was fine. It's not temps either as mine is watercooled and barely goes over 30 degrees on load. After reading reports on various forums i thought 2000 on the memory was a bit much for these. Get it RMA'd. You paid a premium for a factory overclocked card to work at the clocks it states on the box. You should'nt need to be doing any downclocking or faffing about to get it to work properly.

RMAing mine now, its happened again and fed up with it. Want this machine to be 100%.
edit - was getting flashing textures now. This was underclocked at 675/1900 too!

That is surprising considering this review on DriverHeaven

One final point is that the memory on the Zotac card is Qimonda HYB18H512321BF-10. These chips are rated up to 1.0GHz which means they are running within specification. In the past we have seen manufacturers use heavily overclocked (out of specification) chips on their special edition cards, so the fact Zotac have went for higher quality memory modules deserves special mention.

Hi,

Excuse me for bringing up this old post, I have small question about rma'n a card which has had a aftermarket cooler installed, was ocuk ok with this fact and did you have to re-fit the oe cooler?

Cheers,

Re-fit the original cooler. Don't send it in with an aftermarket one installed.

Cheers for the reply, I personally have fitted an aftermarket cooler now (AC S1+120mm) but I have discarded the white pads (doh), at least I know if I had to send it back I could fit the old cooler and some how source the oe white pads.
