Hi all,

This is a new build I am doing, and thought I would make a log.

To kick it off seeing as this is a new post I will tell you quickly who I am.

I have always loved pcs (starting with a C64) and while at high school I used to make PCs for a small shop after work. Anyway one thing lead to another and I ended up as a coder in the finance industry in London.

So I haven't built a kick butt pc in a long time, and I did last year, but it never really got finished (working but case never on) it had a quad core and my first water cooling.

Fast forward 12 months. The wife needs a decent machine to do some study and testing for work (being a solaris admin) and I am sick of having hard disks in boxes with stuff on them cause there is no room. So I saw an oppertunity to upgrade (and had some spare cash).

Her new machine (using my old parts)
Core 2 Quad
8 Gigs of Ram
7 * 1.5tb Samsung Green (all new)
2 * 500gb 7200rpm in mirror for OS
2 * 1.5tb 7200rpm in Raid 0 for virtual machines etc
Rack case with space for 20 hot swap sata disks (new)
1 LSI Raid controller (new)

and now... I get to build my new baby...... specs comming next

So next part...

(I forgot to mention I got a workstation nvidia quattro off a friend for free that is passive cooling for her machine)

Onto my machine....
I had left
XSPC RS 360
Laing D5 Pump
XSPC Bay res
heaps of compression fittings (1/2 hose 1/4 screw)
Case with lots of cuts and holes to fit old system
1 Vel Raptor
1 GTX280 with EK full copper block
Various fans (too many to remember them all)
and various lengths of hose

this was my starting point, I hated working with my case so I have just ordered

the 800D ! yay it should come tomorrow.

I also ordered the Asus Rampage II Extreme and a i7 920
12 gigs of G.Skill 2ghz ram (6 * 2) that I will run well under that to get it all going.

I am awaiting another GTX 280 I got off ebay and I have another EK block waiting for it.

Some new liquid (blood red) and a corsair 1000w modular power supply.

I also got a new corsair SSD 128gb drive for boot and am wondering at this point if I get a free t-shirt or something for becomming a corsair fan boy!

Anyway over the weekend hopefully I will get started with some pics and tell you all how it is going.

Any suggestions, or mocking, or praise is accepted... and if you see some reason it will all blow up feel free to tell me before I turn it on!

Yeah well as she is a Solaris Admin for a massive communication company, I told her I would build her a new pc if she looked after all the disks for a file server. Now I can have a nice clean pc and she can have ALL the storage for EVERYTHING! :) I have two 1gb network cards on that and my new machine so I will use a direct cross over to access the storage and the other out to the home hub....

You don't get a free t-shirt until you post pic's and fit a H50-1 cooler.

Note - This may not be 100% true :)

I would have thought that a programmer working in London would not have any issues with spelling. Then again, is it just numbers you need to be good with in the finance industry?

Hahaha, you are right, numbers I can do, spelling not so much! Also I am from down under so give me a break.. mate

Anyway I forgot to mention I already got a water block for the LGA1366

I got the
Aqua Computer Cuplex HD Core i7.

The other thing that made me jump to the SLI setup is that I am doing more and more CUDA at work and at home for fun and now Nvidia allow you to enumerate a device that is in an SLI group, which you couldn't before. So no reconfig to go from games to coding!

Hahahaha, I guess it could be. I currently have about 2.9tb of stuff on disks that are spread out over the house. I want to get rid of them all and put all my stuff into one storage area. So I copied everything off the two 1.5tb 7200's last night using solaris to read the ntfs partitions.

The loading bay has just rung, I think my new case and parts are here !!! Awesome.

Solaris BOOOOo

AIX all the way!

ARRIVED ! !

Well overclockers delivered the case at super high speed. Ordered yesterday, at at my work loading bay this morning. So I now have my 800D, blood red cooling fluid and my SSD.

I will take some photos of all the new bits tonight and then a photo of the old parts once they have been pulled out of my old case tomorrow.

Now I am getting excited, but still waiting on my second GTX 280.

Do you think a 1000w psu is enough if I want to put a third gtx 280 in there.

I know they are 240w each

720w for gfx I wonder if there is enough left for the board + chip and ssd

looks good!.
You will be in you wifes good books for building her a PC, and at the same time you get to offload all those noisey hardrives :P . Smart thinking (;

Quick post, as the cooler was too big to close the wifes case I have spent tonight doing that so a couple of pics of her computer to show the drives etc
