Just got one of these Obsidians with solid sidepanel. Will eventually watercool but for now just air. From what I've read the stock fans are not great. So what I am thinking of doing is running Noctua 140mm fans everywhere and the new Noctua ND-D14 heatsink Has anyone done this ? From what I understand they fit in normal 120mm fan hole mounts so should be fine.

Looking for some advice here. Maybe Noctuas are not the best fans to go for and maybe I should be looking at Scythe Gentle Typhoon 1250rpms for the top, and Xigmatec 140mm fans for the bottom intake and rear fan. But here is what I am proposing :

- 140mm noctua fan as airintake on bottom - will need to use the 140mm fan brackets for this which come with the Noctua
- 140mm noctual fan on back of case also intaking air - can use normal 120mm fan mounts on case
- 3 top 140mm noctuas as outtakes, except maybe reverse one of them so its an intake - the rear back one perhaps ? - again use normal 120mm fan mounts on case
- Replace HD fan with noctua 140mm and add another noctua 140mm to the HD fan in bottom cage (wont be using cage so maybe not worth it) - the top HD fan will need to use noctua fan brackets in order to fit on the cages fans mounts

1 concern with Noctua 140mm fans :
It might be tricky mounting the 140mm Noctua fans in the 140mm fan mounts. Thinking of the bottom intake and the HD fan here, as all the other fan mounts on the case are 120mm. The way the Noctua works is you use fan screws to attach the brackets to each of the 4 fan holes, as this extends the fans to be compatible with standard 140mm fan mounts. Then rubber grommetts go through the end of each bracket into the 140mm fan mounts on the case. Normal fan screws won't fit unless you go off and find some screws/washers/nuts that do. So not sure if the bottom air intake on the 800D will take rubber grommets where the fan holes are ? Same with top HD cage. Anyone tried a Noctua 140mm fan in the bottom intake ?

Also, what would be the best orientation for the NH-D14 cpu heatsink ? Blowing upwards towards the top outakes makes sense, or if it wont fit, then blowing in from the back the same direction as the rear fan ?

thanks

I have a Xigmatec 140mm intaking air at the bottom (runs silent at full speed), and a noctua 140mm intaking air at the rear (but its a lot louder than the Xigmatec, so i might change it).

I just keep the stock 140mm fan cooling the hard drive bay (seems to do the job).

I use 3 120mm noctua's at the top of my case extracting warm air, and my temps are fine.

I think the stock fans are quite quiet but the airflow is a bit pants, think i will be replacing them all with xigmatek 140mm's. they should keep everything frosty enought till i watercool a couple of months down the line

Thanks for the advice on the Xigmateks. Yes, a few people on various forums have said the Noctua isn't that quiet. I also hate the colour of them. So maybe 140mm Xigmatecks intaking on back and from bottom. Or maybe use what I have now...a Corsair H50 with 2 Apaches in push/pull PWM controlled for cpu intake, and a Xigmateck 140mm on the bottom as an intake.

Also wondering would Gentle Typhoons be best 120mm fans to use as exhaust fans. They have a good reputation for providing great static pressure. No so sure if that helps them as case fans.
