800mhz DDR2 RAM on a MB that supports upto DDR2 667/533?

I have a spare stick of Corsair xms2 512MB DDR2 800mhz RAM - what i want to know is if i was to put this in a MB that states it supports upto 667/533 DDR2 RAM would the RAM just default to this lower setting or would it just not work?
