As some of you may recall the noise of the PS3 has always annoyed me for bluray playback. Because of this i replaced my 60gb for a 40gb as they were quieter and to be fair it was, not perfect but much better.

Skip to last weekend and my 40gb failed - ironically the bluray drive just stopped reading anything (2nd PS3 failure, my 360 is more reliable ;) ) So i took it back and it was replaced. However the replacement is a 80gb unit that is very loud, louder than the 60gb let alone the 40gb :o

My question is thus, are the 80s louder or do i have another duffer - it has a different design on the vent inlets and is half a kilo lighter than the 40gb so i am not sure if it has had a redesign and is louder due to that ?

I can't really answer your question exactly, as I have limited experience of different SP3's. But I can tell you that my 80gb model is very quiet, you'ed never hear anything from it when actually watching a blue ray or dvd or whatever, as the sound it does make is totally drowned out by whatever I happen to be doing on it, even at quite low sound levels late at night.

Maybe our ideas of quiet differ some what, but I really do not find mine loud of intrusive at all. A friend of mine has an Xbox 360 that is much louder than my PS3.

Cheers, mine is still quieter than a 360 but is nosier than a wii for instance - it is hard with noise as it's subjective, a m8 of mine thinks the 360 is fine to watch films on :o

I have a release day 60GB and a brand new 80GB and both are whisper quiet even after several hours watching a BR (have one just attached to a tv, so would definitely hear it if it was noisy)

On this note - quick question, if anyone else has their PS3 directly attached to their tv, do they get a bad volume range (I find my volume very quiet indeed, where a hdmi attached pvr is as loud as expected on same tv)

I got a replacement 40gig that sounded like a boeing 747 taking off as the fans would spin up after a short amount of use. Rang up Sony and they sent me a replacement.

Dunno if that helps.
