Got these in work today, not sure if you know yet but it says they are due for release on the 29th and they come with the dual shock 3 pads

According to the website of the largest high street gaming store the 80Gb are out on the 22nd August (this friday). On a more interesting note they also have pre-owned 60GB PS3 with DS3's for £350 and 60GB PS3 with Haze (hmm) and MGS4 for £360 with a Sixaxis. They are showing in stock and available for imediate dispatch.

I am considering buying an 80gb version. Do you think it's worth waiting for the 120GB version? Is it going to be the same console with just an updated HD?

The 160GB is the same consoles with a bigger HDD, if its say only £30-50 more than a 80GB then its probably worth getting. A 160 GB drive is about £30-40 so to up your 80 to a 160 is going to be close to the price of the 160, not including the £50 worth of DLC you get with the 160Gb. So the 160 is probably better value only if you want to get a bigger HDD and the DLC stuff is worth while.
Just another note these 80GBs must be slightly different to the 40GBs as test have shown they use at least 10W less power when idle and when loaded.

Yeh we got them in at work aswell. Look's great but i already have a 40GB plus a dualshock so a bit late for me. Might go buy a bigger drive at somepoint for the game download's plus music

I just got a 40GB second hand for a few notes over £200. When I need to I will slap a 320+ GB drive in.

It was not worth me paying the extra for a new one (the 40GB has a 1 year warranty anyway), mind you the Six Axis controller is poo. I'll get a DualShock and relegate the Six Axis to player 2.

From what i can tell the 80gig is identical to the 40gig just with a larger harddrive. The reason for this is probably because 80gig harddrives are now cheaper/the same price to manufacture as 40gigs, nothing to do with changing the core hardware, just cost cutting. The 160gig will be for people who want a larger harddrive but don't know how to change it themselves imo, people like my parents.

hmm...Good point. Maybe I should get a 40gb, I cant see changing the harddrive being hard. I mean I changed the hard drive in my original Xbox, and that wasnt meant to be done :p PS3 is built to be upgradeable. Thats why the warranty doesnt become void when you open it up.

I may have a look around for a 60gb. I've not looked.

Get the 80gb rather than the 40gb as it has a Dual Shock 3 included. Hard drive is really easy to upgrade.

If you want a 60gb the main game highstreet retailer had them second hand on their web site for about £350 with a Dual Shock 3.

Picked up an 80gb this afternoon, lovely little console and got the Dualshock 3 controller too. Looks fantastic in HD :)

I've had my 60gb since launch and still have over 24gb of storage left on the drive. By the time I come to upgrade the 320gb drives will probably be worth about £35.

I don't find the storage capacity an issue because all of my media is on the PC upstairs and just streams to to PS3 in the living room downstairs.

I'd just buy whatever PS3 is the cheapest.

80GB Core model draws less energy than 40GB

Looks like the 80GB Core PS3 may be more energy efficient than ever. A user at the Slickdeals forum connected his brand new 80GB Core system to a Kill-a-watt and discovered a slight energy savings. For example, the 40GB model used 155.2 watts when playing MGS4 -- the 80GB model used only 130 watts. The 40GB used 125.8 watts when idle on the XMB, while the 80GB used 111.9 watts. The popular theory is that Sony has secretly switched to new 65nm RSX chips: these are cheaper to manufacture, and are considered more reliable. Sony has not yet responded to these claims, but we wouldn't be surprised if each new SKU introduces new savings for the costly PS3 manufacturing process.

Hmmm, I may well buy an 80GB model then and sell my original 60GB. I wonder how much I would get for my 60GB as they are quite in demand aren't they?
