Hi guys first of all apologies if this has already been answered but i did a quick search and couldn't see any definitive answer (on both forums and google)

I have an 80gb ps3 console which i bought a few days ago and I'm loving it to bits. (uncharted is one of the best games i have ever played)

anyway i never had the pleasure of getting a ps2 (was more a Nintendo man back then) and i know that i have missed out on some pretty epic ps2 games. Can i play these on my ps3? The Internets has been misleading some people say yes some say no?

Halp

You can only play PS2 games on the 60gig model of PS3 which has been discontinued. I'm afraid your only means to do so would be to buy a slim PS2 (approx £50)

Short answer: No

Long Answer: No, backwards compatibility was removed after the release of the 40GB PS3. The 80GB PS3 is another different release of the console with simply a bigger hard drive.

//edit: DAMN YOU STREETEH! :(

Its a shame that sony stopped the backwards compat tbh.

Then again it was to "save" costs.

You can still play PS1 games if I recall on the 80GB ver just not PS2 sadly :(

Tbh in my eyes the price cut from the 'downgrade' of the PS3 to create the 40gig is what saved it. It just wasn't selling, even huge Sony fanboys like me refused to pay the huge amount of money required for the 60gig. As soon as that price cut came about i jumped on it, yeah i would have loved backwards compatibility but frankly i couldn't justify the additional cost.

This i very true. I only got mine recently because i had some spare cash kicking around and i could justify the 299 price tag. Just wondered about the backwards compatibility thing because i know there are lots of great games i could get hold of.

Why not start with the PS1 classics if graphics don't bother you? The 80gig does have PS1 BC and games such as final fantasy VII to IX, vandal hearts, vagrant story and many others are fantastic games.

Yeah i played a few PS1 games back in the day. Might give it a go
Might add you on psn if you don't mind mate. Not really got any ps3 buddies other then my brother who lives away.

Dint worry I'm not your average Internets weirdo i promise :)

If money and space isn't too much of a concern, I would prefer to play PS1/PS2 games on the PS2 anyways. That way I won't have extra wear and tear on the PS3. The backwards compatibility would have been very useful in some cases though.
