Installed Ubuntu from the Linux Mag DVD onto my 820 / GA-945P-S3 / 2GB box that's been happily running XP Pro and the FAH console client for days. Seemed okay so loaded the SMP client according to the instructions from the FAH web site. All okay until I tried to run it when it said the CPU was detected as i686 and wasn't 64-bit. I thought Pentium D was 64-bit or have I missed something? Alternatively, is there something I need to set in Ubuntu?

bet its 6.8
you need 6.10 or later.

Is there not a 32- and 64-bit version of Ubuntu 6.10?

Make sure it is 64-bit. Also, does it support intel 64-bit. They call it AMD64 so maybe it only supports AMDs.

As you got Linux to start, I guess it does support Intel 64-bit - AMD64 is just an instruction set, newer Intel chips support the exact same instructions.

It says 6.10 on the DVD and in the Help. I can try the download version to see if that's different. If that doesn't work it'll have to be Suse 10.

The CD you got could be just the 32bit version,
$ uname -m

That should tell you what version you are using.
Also when you do get Ubuntu 64bit on remember to install 32bit compatible libraries.

A fresh download of 6.10 made no difference. Latest issue of Linux Mag has Suse 10.2 on the cover DVD so I'll try that tomorrow when the current sessions on that PC finish.

just spent 35 hours and 2/3rds of my monthly download limit on fedora 6 and it won't install on my opty rig. :(

desperate to try linux folding but is it worth the hassle to a complete noob?

If its the one off the Linux Format magazine you'll need to burn the AMD64 ISO to CD first as the one that boots and installs off the DVD is the 32bit version. There is the 64bit ISO somewhere on the DVD.

No, it was from Linux Magazine and I can't find an extra .iso on it. There are two <blah>amd64.deb files hidden in a library but that's it. If I knew what to do with a .deb I might be able to load them. Wiki tells me they're Debian packages. Can I just run them or do they need unpacking first?

Right, I got myself Linux Format magazine yesterday and that has Ubuntu. I also have the Ubuntu ISO still from when I installed it the other week.

If people want me to I can host the iso somewhere [or the .torrent]. The torrent is probably the better option as it took my half an hour tops to download [500kbps anyone :D]

I can't host it just yet as I have things to do this morning. However, when I am home I will linkafy you good people.

The Linux Format mag appears to have an installation guide so I will nick parts of that and compile BTIs stuff on installing the SMP client and other bits and pieces.
