Going to get an 8320 soon enough, not sure of what fan to get... would rather not spend a ton of money but would like to be able to overclock properly.

I've got a Freezer 7 I could use but not sure how they fair with those.. I intend on overclocking is much as possible with the hope of reaching 4.5

Cheers!

The answer is watercooling.
Check if your case can accomodate it.
You can get a h60v2 or h80 even if your case officially doesn't support watercooling. They use 120.1 rads and fit in rear 120mm fan slot.

Cooler is dependent on case CPU clearance, motherboard, RAM height, PCI slot clearance, etc.

CLC H2O are about the same as top air cooling, generally cost more, are louder and not as dependable (possible pump failure and/or leaks). Keep in mind total CLCs' cost is similar or less than just a good pump or radiator cost for custom H2O loop.

Air coolers only have the fan to go bad.. easily to replace on most coolers

I've got the Zalman Z9 plus.

Unless I can get a deal on water cooling I think it may be out of my budget honestly.

I was looking at Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO which is around £25.

It will be:
Asus M5A99FX PRO
8320
4x 2gb ripjaw 12600 (for now)
tagan 900 watt psu
120 gb samsung evo
290 r9

Ripjaws are 41mm tall.
Best guess for CPU clearance is 159.5mm, but have seen some saying 181mm. Be best if you could measure from motherboard to sidecover. CPU clearance is 8mm less. ;)

What is the max you want to spend?

It looks like it's about 160mm judging from what I've googled, I don't have a accurate way of measuring right now.

I could maybe fork out £50 if it will be worth it...

Maybe a h55?

  • K2 will perform better and be quieter.
  • K2 may have a fan problem after several years of use.. Easy to replace a fan.. and can use with any fan if you have to order a new fan.
  • K2 will never have any pump noise or problems.
  • H55 might have pump issues (most common problem with CLC) and if pump goes you have no cooling

CLC will perform okay for a year or two. After that performance drops of or they die.

Air will last almost forever. After 3-5 years new fans and that's all that goes wrong.

I have 7 year old Thermalright Ultra 120A and 5 year old Cogage Arrow (original Silver Arrow). Changed mounts to newer CPUs and new fans and they are great. Cogage Arrow is still performs right up there with K2, D14, 14PE, Silver Arrow SB-E, etc.
