i know back in the old days, you could flash the bios of lower models with the next model up to increase performance. is this still possible, if so, what/where would i do to upgrade my 8400GS. also, i have rivatuner, which has quite a wide range of oc possabilites, anyone know what the best settings are for this card?

It was only with certain cards, and it was usually to unlock hidden pipes (eg 9800SE to 9800pro).

Cards don't use pipes anymore (we're now on USA), and cards with the same core are usually differentiated by clockspeeds, rather than masked shaders.

You can overclock your 8400GS, but you're not going to be able to unlock shaders that aren't there ;)

ok, thats fair enough, is there much gain from overclocking it then, or will it just shorten the life for no noticable performance increase?

there's not much point in overclocking an 8400GT.. it's not a suitable card for any major gaming, apart from Q3 engine games - which it'll already perform alright at. Overclocking the card will give you a more playable framerate in HL2 engine games like L4D and TF2, but only at 1024/1280.

Do you game at the moment? Are you looking to game more? What resolution is your monitor?

i dont do a lot of gaming at the moment because i have a ps3 which out performs the pc, but as there is a lot more games on the pc i was looking at maybe doing more on it.
its a 20" LCD not sure what the max res is but it is quite high from what i can remember.

The PS3 does not outperform a PC, might look better at times, due to blu-ray, but wont outperform a PC.

it out performs MY pc in pretty much every way. dont think there is anything i can do on my pc that my ps3 cant do equally well, if not better

it out performs MY pc

fair enough :)

If you had the cash to spend ~£100 on a new graphics card, your machine would be on par with the PS3 for gaming. Spend £150 on a new card, and it'd beat it into the ground.

If you don't want to spend anymore money on a new card, just keep using your PS3 for gaming - I mean, they cost a fortune.. make it worth the money :p
