8400M GS

ANyone know anything about these cards, more specifically how they compare to the older cards? basically im looking to buy a new laptop, and this card is what it comes with, now im not expecting amazing results, but would it be around about a performance match for my old 6800 out of my rig, or worse/better?

The 6800GT is quite a bit quicker than a 8400GS, and even quicker than the mobile version (presuming it's clocked lower than the desktop variant?).

Edit: removed link due to competitor adverts on the page. <-- Basically it showed the 6800GT beating the 8400GS by over twice the framerate in every game tested.

8400GS is a 64-bit card, not much faster than a 7300GS to be quite blunt. Certainly nowhere near a 6800GT.

To be honest all im bothered about is whether its capable of playing games like CSS smoothly at the screens native resolution. I know its not going to be mega fast, but im hoping itll be able to run games like UT2k4 and CSS relatively fine.

If you have a game of some kind installed on it already that has a stress test then it would be appreciated, but if you dont have anything on then dont worry as im buying the laptop anyways, just wanted an idea of what to expect to be able to play games wise

edit - well i would but it wont let me run steam in offline mode at all apparently and dont have wireless here so i cant get into css to run the test

when i was playing over xmas im pretty sure it was all at high with some aa/af at 12x10 and was getting a very playable frame rate.

i'll try hooking it to the net via my cable to see if it'll let me run steam offline like i do on my pc (steam is blocked on the uni net )

edit - failed at that as well, dunno how to get it to work, its vista and its a laptop and doesnt have the same option as the pc. sorry i couldn't help but if theres anything you want me to install to try i dont mind, not like i have much else to do at 4:23am

Just bought my gf a Vostro 1700 with one of these in so may give it a try sometime. I'm hoping it will give ~Radeon 9500pro performance but that's a bit of a guess on my part.

Looking at this chart: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html it's getting ~4.5k in 3dmark2003 but I've no idea how accurate their tests are. As mentioned that would put performance significantly below your 6800 which should be getting 8k+

If you want to do any proper gaming on your laptop something like the 8600M GT 256meg is not much more expensive (an extra £70 or thereabouts) and a lot quicker.



The main advantage from getting an Nvidia/ATI card is that you know the drivers/compatibility should be goodcompared to Intel gfx or whatever, allowing you to at least run games even if the framerate isn't up to much. So for very casual gaming any modern NV/ATI card should be ok.
