Hi all,

First time poster here. After browsing through this forum for a little while I'm 100% certain you guys can help me with my current build. I've only built 2 PCs before and I've slightly upped my price range since my last.

I'm looking to build an essentially mid level PC to be ordered by next Friday. My budget is around £850.

This is what I have so far and I'm just wondering if one of you chaps can better it!

Cheers.

PS. I forgot to mention that I already have an OS, HD Monitor, keyboard and mouse setup. I will buy 5.1 surround sound speakers at a later date.

You can use onboard sound for now, its come on a lot since you probably last built PC, Id give it a go first certainly, Also its prob worth getting a separate HDD for boot drive, maybe even SSD

Building it yourself you get better gfx card, better mobo, SSD included, for gaming the 955 is just as good as the 1055

Didnt include Evo cooler as its out of stock atm

Cheers for the replies lads. But just a few things.

I also use my PCs for photoshop and music recording, would the above setups be okay for this too?

I've never used an SSD hard drive before so excuse me for asking what's its major benefit is considering what -'d be paying for it.

Secondly, would the quad core AMD really be just as good as the x6? I understand that the stock speed is 0.4mhz quicker than the stock x6 that I chose. Would there be headroom on the 995 for overclocking? I'm only using a 2.33ghz dual core atm so I'm sure any more cores would feel like a massive improvement but I just want to be sure :)

Is there anywhere I could save a bit of cash so I can stil get the HAF 932 case, too?

Sorry I'm asking so many questions, but for me to spend this much money on anything I need to be 100% sure that I'm getting the best bang for my buck, which is part of the reason that I chose the MSI gtx460 HAWK edition. Is the 470 a fair bit better?

Thanks again in advance!

The thing with hexcores, is that unless programmes/software uses the extra 2, its pointless paying extra for one. I'm no expert with what are CPU heavy programmes and what uses X amount of cores and what doesn't, but I'm pretty sure photoshop and music recording doesn't require 6 cores. If it does, then my bad, but if it doesn't then the quad core will be pefectly fine for your needs, and perhaps even a tad quicker with higher clockspeed.

SSD's are generally used primarly as boot drives. Install the OS on it along with any frequently used applications (internet browser) and what not and windows will boot in a jiffy and will be all round snappy :D

I personally would go the extra for a GTX 470 over any variation of 460, but the 460's certainly aren't a bad card, especially the hawk. 95thrifles spec is pretty much all you'd need, however you can save a little bit on the mobo if you don't plan to crossfire at any point (which I presume you don't if you are going for an Nvidia card :p which can't SLI on AMD boards anyway).

hi what about the msi 890a fuzion for £99?
the description says you can use any dual gpu setup.
anyone have this board and care to share info about the board?

Cheers guys! Lets see where we are now.

I will now drop to the AMD Black Edition 955 and I'll get the Crucial 64gb SSD. I think I'm going to stick with the gtx460 HAWK because it's quite cheap in comparison to the 470 and I'd really like to try and overclock it to their beastly advertised clock speed. (I like a challenge :p)

I'd really like to try and keep the HAF 932 so I've included it in a picture of my build so far. (I've also reverted to the Seagate 1.5tb HDD purely because of the extra size as it will only be used for storage!)

Now I just need to pick a motherboard and a decent cooler. Btw, I'll be using this for HD movies on my TV so the surround sound is quite important. Is onboard sound capable of 5.1?

If the sound card isn't needed then that leaves about £213 to find the Mobo, memory and the cooler. Is this doable?

its ok for the price, sure there are better, but then you have to take into consideration the ram heatsinks getting in the way of big ones, you may be able to move the ram to the furthest slots away.
