It seems HardwareZone got an early 8600 GTS card to have a play with...

They benched it with 3D mark 05 and 06, and tested it with Company of Heroes, FAR, Quake 4, Splinter Cell (the new one) and a couple of others

They compared it to other cards such as: 8800 GTS 320 MB, X1950 PRO, 7950 GT

Now I know what you will all be thinking, the drivers are still early and so we can probably expect performance to increase. HOWEVER, I am not sure they will be able to speed it up THAT much with just the drivers, and in the test they conducted it was struggling to keep pace with the X1950 PRO.

Anti Aliasing seemed to be the killer, with it only clocking 27 FPS in FEAR at 1280 X 1024 res with AA enabled!!!!!

Higher resolutions also beat it to the floor and kicked it hard, presumably the 128 bit bus and 256 MB of VRAM is what is holding it back there.

I hope Nvidia can suddenly make it faster than an X1950 PRO or a 7950 GT with better drivers, because at the moment it seems that Direct X 10 is the only thing it has over those two cards, and considering the price they are selling it at, many will think "why send this when I could spend just a little more and get the 8800 GTS 320 MB?"
Apart from the fct that it is small and single slot, HardwareZone points out that the difference between the 8600 GTS and the 8800 GTS 320 MB is HUGE, thus underlining my point above about cost.
We should start to see full reviews of it soon, with proper drivers, but it is not looking hugely impressive, and certainly not a new 6600 GT or 9700 PRO for DX10....

One good thing though, it is apparently very cool running and quiet, so it should overclock nicely and do well in smaller, more cramped rigs (or quiet rigs)

The NDA was lifted at 2pm so there should be a few reviews around online. My site has one of the 8600GT but I can't link there without pimping.

I think you should be completely fine as long as you link direct to the review and there's no advertisements for competitor shop websites etc. on it. :)
