8600 vs 9600

Significant. The 8600GT is a very poor performer, hamstrung by a narrow memory interface, a lack of shaders and low clock speeds.

A 9600GT should be at least twice as fast.

Don`t agree. Physics wise this ain`t the case. Practically, I own an 8600GT (though don`t use it now due to an upgrade) and it performed admirably at 1680 x 1050.

The 9600GT is not an upgrade, end of and in most cases, it`s the same bloody card!!

That's just not true, look at benchmarks. The 9600GT 512MB is faster than a 8600GTS.

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/nvidia_geforce_9600_gt_performance/page2.asp

The 9600GT is about 50% faster than a 8600GTS, which is faster than a 8600GT.

They are nowhere near being the same card. The 9600GT is just shy of the 8800GT and in SLI perform not far off a 9800GX2!

The 8600GT, on the other hand....is not very good at all....and pretty terrible in comparison with the 9600GT

thx for the info...and the benchmarks looks like the 9600 is the way to go...on a budget ya see :P

my 8600 has been running WoW at 20fps -_-;;
so need a upgrade lolz

The 9600GT is a 64 SP card, so it is more an evolution\replacement for the 8600GTS. Not really enough of an upgrade in my opinion. Just shy of an 8800GT? The stock card is 25% slower, hardly close in performance.

9600GT should be a minimum of twice the performance of an 8600GT... (going purely on hardware specs) however I still say avoid the 9600GT unless your on a really strict budget as the 8800GT has a lot more SPs.

You're thinking of the 8800 series and the 9800 series. The 9600 series are based off a completely different core (G94) that is about twice as powerful as the 8600 (G84) series and a bit (scenario dependant, admittedly) slower than the 8800 GT. The 9500 GT on the other hand is basically an 8600 GTS

Please do some research before making ridiculous claims like that, it is nothing like the same card, see this comparison here if you really don't believe me. The 8600gt was never the best of cards when it came out tbh. Even 2 8600gt's in sli cannot compete with 1 9600gt see here The 8600gt was always severely crippled by its 128 bit memory bus.

Aye, but still not much of an upgrade. In real terms it is not twice as fast and gets smacked all over the place anyway by the 3870 in that benchmark! Now that would be an upgrade ;) Can be had for £7 more ;)

Mmm, OK, I`ll concede that the 9600 is a better card, but upgrade wise? Hell no :)

I know, I stand corrected ... hehe ;)

Edit: Forgot to mention ... I completely was on the wrong track and about what Lightnix said, he knew what I was on about (thanx man) and admittedly should`ve read the OP properly.

Oh to be human ... ah well

Not much between the 3870 and 9600gt to be fair, I would hardly say the 9600gt gets smacked all over the place, again I'll give you some benchmarks ;)

Alreet, alreet ... bad night!

Wor lass was workin til 9, my 19 yr old lass just split up this afternoon with her lad of 1½ yrs, had to go to Tescos on my own and do a full shop, the pilot light on my brand spankin new boiler won`t come on and I`m ****** freezin though I`m chuffed I`ve got an immersion heater so I could at least have a David Gower, multiple ATi driver errors playin FO3 so I`m up a height anyway, lost £35 on 888 dot com playin Texas Hold `Em and I`ve had 11 bottles of Stella (2 x 18 bottles @ Tesco for £12).

On a plus side, it ain`t raining :D

But hey, wrong is wrong and I don`t mind hauling in a huge lump of humble pie ;)

lol, sorry didn't mean to keep picking you up on your mistakes, it was just too irresistible ;) I'll shut me mouth now.:D Bargain on the stella btw.

Hey, no problem coupe, I`ll feel worse when I read my subscribed emails tomorrow :D

Never mind, worse things happen at sea ... and when u got 2 teenage daughters ... and when u see that Michael Owen is going for his coaching badges. Is this in between injuries, **** me, it`ll take him 67 years!

:D lol, Owen's past his best now anyway, what you need is a rich middle eastern sheikh with a bucket load of money, and get rid of Ashley ;)

Yeah, the 9600gt would, me thinks, perform substantially better. Be a different case if you were comparing the higher end 8800gt but the 8600 is really only entry level imo. Some people have had good success when enabling 8600 in SLI. Otherwise 9600 imo.
