Hi, i will be switching from a desktop to a laptop soon and the 8600gt seems like a decent enough graphics card. Will it match the performance of the 7900gs i have in my desktop at the minute?

The laptop i am thinking of is the vostro 1500 with the ddr2 8600gt...

8600GT = 7600GT performance if i recall correctly, so a fair bit slower than a 7900GS.

Also the mobile variants are often slower than their desktop counterparts, so the mobile 8600GT, may well be even slower than a 7600GT, its normally compared to.

ahhh ok how would the 512mb 8700 compare with it then? much better? Would it be worth the extra money?

I do a bit of gaming not much, likes of supcom, bf2... etc
 
8600gt is far quicker than a 7600gt. around 30% quicker and 8600gt does score more in 3dmarks than 7900gs.

also be weary of the 79 series failure rate.
 
so would you definatly suggest if im switching my 7900gs go for a better card in a laptop? What would be a better option? 7950? or 8700?

Many games claim to not run (to not be suited to) laptops due to k/b & how they are configured i believe. So you may have problems running certain games no matter what laptop you get. Though the 7950 is the best choice from those cards you have mentioned so far.
 
i would quite like to have dx10 support, what is the 8700 like. Does anyone know a date for the 8800m to be released?
 
I'd say if you can find a laptop with a 7950GTX in it at a price that's reasonable for you then definately go for it over the 8 series M GT's, the 8700 just looks to be a highly clocked 8600GT and although it's got the DX10 hardware support I doubt it'll cut it for when the games require it.
Saying that, if you got a DDR3 8600GT or an 8700GT then I doubt you'd be disapointed.

Reading around on Notebook Forums a few folk are really happy with the 8700's performance, it supposedly handled Bioshock alright in Vista with the details up. (Didn't see what resolution)
 
Yea the laptop im considering is the rock xtreme 770... it has a choice between the gddr3 8700gt 512mb or the 7950gtx. The gtx is 100 quid more tho... So that 8700 should do the job nicely then?
 
Well, just from reading other people's experiences it seems that it's a decent enough mobile card that can get some alright overclocks.
The 7950 is faster but it would just come down to if you could justify the extra cost. I've played Armed Assault on a mates Dell with the 7950 and was blown away by how fast the card was considering it's in a laptop!
Definately check out some experiences of the 8700 users on a laptop specific forum as they're bound to help you decide.

I guess at the end of the day you could pick either card and think "what if I chose the other one?"
