Hi all i have just noticed and i feel stupid. my graphics card 8600gts by leadtek
http://www.leadtek.com/eng/3d_graphic/overview.asp?lineid=1&pronameid=370

now the fan spins up nice and fast and stays fast until i see the windows splash screen (or there abouts). i had a strange problem as it wasnt artifacts but it was definatly distortion or some sort. to fix i used riva tuner to underclock both core and memory by 100mhz each. this fixed it all be at lower performance. now htat i see the problem after spending some time cleaning the inside of my pc it becomes aparant that the fan isnt even spinning. however nothing is blocking it as i cleaned it with some compressed air and all appears fine.

idle temps on normal stock clock is now 60c idle. definatly something going wrong here. by underclockign it i got better temps such as 39c idle and 50c load.

ive had the graphics card for about 6 months and never really noticed the fan as its hidden from view by the heatsink.

im trying to research it on google but not having any luck. can anyone help me? or is my best bet to rma the card? or should i just wait it out and get a 8800gt which i was going to do soon as possible (funds).

I dont think its obvious. Ive owned a bfg 8600gts and they are nice low powered cards. You neednt worry its going to melt or anything, Ive run one from a 300w psu.
Unlike many top end cards its really a hassle free card and in this case its trying to be noise free too I think

My memory is failing me presently but I think the fan is software controlled, thats why it changes in speed when windows loads.
Its possible you have the drivers or other software directing the fan to turn off at that point

Download some software and give it a test, dont worry about the temperature till its way past 80c

ati tool would be a good start also try the omega nvidia drivers, upload some screenshots for us maybe.

If you try and RMA a card that is not faulty they will just charge you for sending it back so please dont assume there is a problem without at least discussing it with the retailer first
