Howdy :)

Just bought myself a Dell Inspiron 1520 (T7250, 8600mGT), and it's the first laptop I've bought that doesn't have integrated graphics

Is it possible to overclock the graphics card safely? I understand that in desktops the 8600's have a fair bit of headroom, but will I need to be worried about temperatures?

Last time I overclocked a lappy was ~6 years ago, managed to get my G3 800mhz iBook to 850mhz :p

I'd be pretty wary about making that chip work any harder than it already is, at least until the claims of them being faulty have been confirmed / denied.

What are you trying to do on a laptop that an 8600M-GT isn't fast enough for?

I don't yet know what the 8600M-GT isn't fast for, the laptop hasn't been delivered yet ;)

I'm currently playing TF2 and FlatOut2 on my desktop, and I'm sure the 8600 will handle these games, but having maxed out AA and whatnot would be nice :)

I had an xps 1530 with 8600gt and the gfx was always overclocked! It was the only way I could play forged alliance with reasonable fps.

You just need to be extra careful with temps (monitoring them at all times) and if they are high get a notebook cooler.

In order to overclock you will need:
-Updated drivers with modified inf (the dell drivers ar so old). A quick google search will net you these.
-Rivatuner to overclock and monitor temps.
