i got my vostro 1500 today and am very disappointed, it seems there are two versions of the 8600m GT

one has DDR2 ram with effective 800MHZ
one has DDR3 ram with effective 1400MHZ

the latter has 75% more bandwidth

dell chose to go with the DDR2 800Mhz one

ill probably buy bioshock tomorrow and see how it runs on that chip, if it doesn’t run well im going to send my laptop back, they should have said they where using a crippled 8600gt

Perhaps try here?

P.S. cells do you have a source for that - very tempted myself and wouldnt mind seeing who is doing the better version...

ps3ud0

my source is the laptop sitting next to me :(

i don’t have it connected to the net so cant view my 3dmark06 results or i would have done some testing

here is a thread where some people are discussing the two versions.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=147708

seems in CSS the standard one with DDR3 is getting 40% more FPS

dam stupid dell, they probably didn’t even save £2 doing this

edit: wrong link, changed to correct link

I was more looking at which laptops if any have the DDR3 version - seems the Asus G1S does, but I cant find anything (looked really quickly) that said DDR3...

Some laptops have the ddr3 version

The thing that gets me is that it would have cost them no more than a fiver the use ddr3 over ddr2!

Apart from cost there is nothing that stoped them using ddr3, which would have been about 40% faster in games (with its 75% more bandwidth) and probably ran cooler as ddr3 uses less voltage compared to ddr2

Very disappointing

The 8600gt in this notebook is really a cross between a 8500 and a 8600

To make matters worse the 8400gt that some dell vostros come with have DDR3

whats the difference between the 8600gt desktop and the 8600m gt lappy?

are they both 32 stream processor cards with 128bit memory interface?

So how can you find out if your lappy has the 8600m gt with ddr3 or ddr 2 version. I'v got a new MacBook Pro 2.2ghz with the 128mb 8600m gt?

Thanks
Perhaps check the website as I presume its the latest refresh ;)
